Hi Guys
I would like to start off by saying this is a fantastic discussion forum...very insightful and provides a good laugh at times. I would like your opinion re my qualifications and the possibility of obtaining work.
I have a BA and Postgrad degree in Finance. I have no Tesol/Celta training however I have taught at a few Universities in Australia over the last 5 years now. Mainly in the economics/finance area. Would such experience be valued by employers? Would this experience make it easier of harder to obtain work?
Thanking everyone in advance and look forward to your replies. |

Yes definitely, this experience will put you in good stead. And with a bit of training and some small Tesol qualfications you can probably get work at a Turkish University. |

Maybe better to look for a job teaching Finance/Economics in an English-medium setting ?
There must be some - although the universities might be looking for an MA/PhD
If looking for an ESL job I think you have to do some sort of Certification. |

Thanks Scot47
Is a MA a must to teach at Universities in Turkey (ESL of other branches)?
I have spent hours reading many posts here so this is not a lazy question...where would I find out more re qualifications needed?
Cheers |

A 4-year degree will get you a job at a University teaching English prep classes. Many tend to want you to have a work permit before you come to the University. The work permit is not too difficult to get, but is a little tricky. To teach anything other than English Prep. you will probably need a masters. Good luck. |

at some univ prep programs you need the masters. You should just go ahead and get the TEFL certificate, IMHO. Look at some of the ads here on Daves or look at tefl.com whichcourse for some ideas. If you ahve some teaching background you could do an online one, though not all schools accept them. If you are in a hurry to be in istanbul, look into the TEFL certificate courses here (British Council, ITI, Vialingua). Bol sanslar. |

Thanks for all your replies....very much appreciated.
When you say a MA is necessary, is that in the field of English/Education or is any MA acceptable to teach english?
Baba Alex, not a big fan of the Beach Boys. |
