Does anyone have an idea how much "start-up" cash is needed if you're going with AEON and using their housing??? Also...are they in Kyoto? |

You dont say what country you are from. AEON leases apartments and teachers pay about 42,000 yen a month in rent for a furnish apartment but no key money. You need enough to survive at least 2 months before you see a paycheck.
A ballpark figure would be $2000-3000 to live on until you get paid. 180,000 yen is considered break-even on expenses for one month, so two months is 360,000 yen or $US3000. |

As Doglover points out, which country you come from can make a big difference, as far as exchange rates are concerned. The yen's doing pretty bad against the dollar, and that's good news if you're exchanging dollars for yen, crap news if you're sending money home.
In any case, I came here from the good 'ol US of A and brought about 1200 USD, and I was fine. You get paid for your training days, and you do see a paycheck your first month, but it's pretty small, and it may be nonexistent if they take your rent out of it for the first month. My manager was kind enough to let me make 2 rent payments out of my first full paycheck, which came at the end of December (I got here last November)
Also, yes, AEON is in Kyoto. Whether they have any openings there is something I couldn't tell ya.
Take care, and I hope that helped a little.. |

Actually it's my Daughter and her boyfriend that are going over to teach .
We are from SUNNY CALIFORNIA, the South Bay area.
They are graduating (2 English Majors) May 07. They are currently taking Japanese and I was thinking about $3000 each. We will be buying all their start-up supplies here. AEON did some recruiting at their school in Northern California. Kyoto seem to be their target destination.
Thanks to all you posters...you have given me great comfort and insight.
While my daughter is doing all the "school stuff" I have just been crossing the t's in terms of living, protpcol, supplies, etc.
Yes I'm a little over protective...but she's an only child and her guy's $$$ is short. I'm trying to help out with purshases for them both. |

I live in Kyoto (southern part)and your daughter will do just fine. I cant give you any specific advice- has she been posted to Kyoto?
there are a number of places she can go to what are called 100-yen stores where she can buy knickknacks e.g. towel racks etc very cheaply. You want to be careful you dont get hit for excess baggage. many things you can buy here.
