Hi,

I have a 60 day visitor visa from Canada. I was wondering, once I get a job (which i hope will be soon! Confused

), do I need to leave the country to obtain my work visa? I thought I saw on this board that if you have a 60 day visitor visa you don't have to go through that hassle? Thanks.

Dear Eyan,

You should be fine. I presume you have a bachelor's degree (or an associates combined with a TESOL certificate).

Once your sponsor school submits all the documentation to Taipei, you will receive a very important document in the mail a week or two later.

Everything will go smoothly from that point on--with regard to change of visa status, ARC, health insurance, etc. There are some fees involved, of course. Should be less than 5000 NT for everything.

Sixty days is more than enough time. But if it takes a few weeks to find that job you might be pushing for time. Go to the hospital and get your health check now. That will take a week to get, which might make all the difference between being able or not to get the paper work done before your visa expires.

GAH..this looking for a job thing is pretty frustrating. I know I just got here a few days ago, and it should take some time..but it seems very difficult to get any responses. I email my resumes..but it doesn't seem very effective. Anyone have any good tips with getting a job here? I've looked in the newspapers and on websites. Any other effective methods? Also...I am CBC...which I think plays a big factor into things! Crying or Very sad

It seems like when I send in my resumes via email, once they see my name or picture...they disregard me! GAH..just because I am asian does not mean I can't speak fluent english! Its so frustrating!! Evil or Very Mad

Dear Elsay,

You certainly know the term 'pound the pavement.' You need to find out where the larger elementary schools are in your city. There will be dozens of private English schools located around most elementary schoools.

Schools want to see you in person. Of course, they generally favor 'white' English teachers; but don't let that stop you!

By the way, what city are you in now? Are you considering moving?

I am living in Taipei right now. I don't know if I am willing to move...I am just getting use to this city. Plus, my friend lives here and I'm staying with her now. Also, I like how they have the MRT, makes commuting a lot easier. Where do you live?

Also, some people have said that I need to get a physical done before I am accepted? Where should I do that? Thanks! Wink

You don't need to get the physical done first in order to be accepted for a job. It just makes it easier if you have limitted time on your visa as it is the first stage of the work permit/ARC procedure once you do get the job.

If you are CBC then I would suggest concentrating your search with jobs which specify ABC/CBC welcome. Also be prepared to accept a slightly lower wage.

Yah, I heard it might be faster to do a physical now...so I don't have to wait for it later. Does anyone have a suggestion of where to do one? Anyone know any english-speaking doctors? And when you say physical...what does that entail? Should I be asking for a woman doctor? Thanks for all the help Ki and Taylor! Very Happy

Dear Eyan,

The physical is not as bad as it sounds. In the past, we had to give urine and stool samples. Urine might still be required in some cases, but stool samples are a thing of the past (for now!)

Any larger hospital in Taipei should be set up to do this. They are likely doing physical exams for dozens of foreign workers (teachers and laborers) every day, so it is a pretty routine matter.

My physical consisted of blood, height, weight, blood pressure and a chest x-ray.

Now, where is everyone situated in? anyone feel like making a new friend? haha...my taiwese friend has been awesome here..but I need to meet some new people and I won't mind having a real conversation, besides a broken english/mandarin conversation!! hehe. I'm in Taipei..so if anyone wants to meet up for coffee or something..msg me!! Smile
