Any ideas about the average amount possible to save in a year on the JET programme? I know situations may be variable, but considering:
Single; aim to live in a semi-urban or rural area, not a big spender.
I am also considering a job with the NET program in HK although I would love to have a balance of saving money and living close to the ocean/ mountains.
Your input would be very helpful! |

This is a bit like asking how long is a piece of string. JET teachers get paid the same but rent paid can vary widely from almost nothing to 70,000 yen a month, with key money. Do you have any outstanding loans or debts to pay off?
A lot will depend on where you are sent, and living costs in Kanto and Kansai can differ from living in a small town on the Japan Sea coast.
A single JET living in Kansai can save money and I have heard of people saving up to $US1000 a month after their expenses. It all depends on how you budget, what you do for entertainment (not much to do in many of these small towns except drink and watch TV) as well as rent. You will get most of your pension refund back after 3 years, or about 700,000 yen, once you return home. |

I live in a midsize town, pay low rent, have an expensive car, go out to eat, travel a LOT, don't try to save at all, and I end up keeping over $1250 of what I make each month. At this rate I'll have like $30,000 saved after the two years I plan to stay.
But every situation is different. Another JET lives in the same building in an apartment just like mine but pays 6 times the rent I do. He also has high loan payments and spends money on alcohol, which I don't. he doesn't have a car, but he travels around a good amount. He showed me his bank statement the other day - it said 300 yen. That's like $3!
It really depends. |
