Hi,
I'm a currently a substitute teacher in the states who will be takng a masters program in education over the course of several summer sessions. I won't have a teaching certificaton until after my second summer ( fall of 2007). After which I plan on trying to get into the international schools circuit. I can't really bear the thought of another entire year of substituting stateside. Primarily because it doesn't pay enough to live, given the average cost of living on the east coast.. I would instead like to teach ESL abroad next year. However, I have a scheduling issue with school in the summer. My courses run from mid June to the end of July. I would reasonably have to be back near the beginning of June.
My first priority is just being able to secure an ESL job somewhere that will allow me to keep my summer school schedule. Second considration would be a relatively good local lifestyle and/or a low stress posion. The third prority, if the second can't be reasonably filled given my situation, would be the potential to save money. Oh yeah, and although I am thinking of doing the M ED in ESL (I haven't decided yet), and therefore could have 9 postgrad credit hours of ESL coursework under my belt, I won't have a CELTA or anything similar by the fall. So my question is, do I have any options to teach ESL abroad next year? All sincere suggestions will be very much appreciated. Thank you. |

A lot of Latin America would meet your good local lifestyle and low stress position considerations. Saving money is a sad joke, however.
School years in Ecuador run Sept-Oct ish to June or July in the mountain region , January to something or other on the coast. You could probably find something to suit your availability, but the pay here isn't great. (It's nice to live on, here, but it won't compare well to other countries or your country of origin.)
If you're interested in Ecuador, PM me.

What Justin wrote: Latin America is a great place as far as lifestyle and work are concerned. It's difficult, however, to find work that will pay you much money beyond what you need to live in modest comfort. |
