I remember reading Sons and Lovers by D.H. Lawrence and I was moved to tears at the end of it.

Another excellent book was Papillon, By Henri Charriere. It was made into a movie with Steve McQueen where he was one of the few people to successfully escape Devils Island, a penal colony in French Guiana.

just finished:
All I Need to Know I Learned In Kindergarten - Robert Fulghum
Less Than Zero - Bret Easton Ellis

Both were pretty good. It helps to read them simultaneously - LTZ was pretty horrifying in some spots, but "Kindergarten" helped me stay positive.

Now reading:
The End of the Affair - Graham Greene

Reading Catch 22 on the way to and from work at the moment. Really funny, though nothing much seems to happen.

I just read 'Jane Eyre.' My mom had been suggesting in for many years and so I assumed I wouldn't like it. But it was great.

Just finished The Neverending Story, Michael Ende. I read it when I was in my early teens. But I found the first few chapters a slog, but quickly got back into it. I figure it'll appeal to my returnee students.

Now, Amrita by Banana Yoshimoto. It's a novel about sisters, loss. Bittersweet and vivid.

Also, Sex, Ecology and Spirituality, Ken Wilber, a big brick of a book.

The first two, you can get at Maruzen in Tokyo. The third one, I bought on a trip home.

I recently finished Slick by Daniel Price:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0812972368/ref=ed_oe_p/102-8057092-2789767?%5Fencoding=UTF8

It was the best novel I read in a long time - couldn't put it down. It will appeal to those who think that most of what they see/hear in the mass media is bogus.

I recently read a book by Niall Murtagh called 'Blue Eyed Salaryman'... something that may be relevant for those unfamiliar with what life for a 'foreigner' is like in Japan. Not only that, but it is an interesting insight into the 'salaryman' work ethos and how different it is from what Westerners may be used to. As someone planning to head off to Japan next year, this was a really enjoyable and informative read.
