Machista; yes. Macho; no. It's an attitude (machismo) rather than being physically 'macho'.

Yeah, you definitely don't have to be "macho" here to get the girls to have crushes on you. I have plenty of female students who "like" me ... and I'm pretty gay. Smile

No, don't abandon the macho!!!!!!!!!! Trust me, you just have to get used to the culture there and then you will start to understand many of the things we would find ridiculous or offensive (although i never understood the mullet). Some girls actually like piropos. After a while, I started to get self-concious if I didn't get any piropos in a day. For women, I would reccomend not getting offended and just ignoring it, or at least try to look at it as a complement if it's just something like "Que linda que sos"=You're really pretty.
Also, maybe it will help for me to tell you about the stereotype of Argentine girls. And this is definately a stereotype, please don't get offended, this is just what Argentine guys have told me. It's called "histrica." Basically, this was described to me as the "puta monja" personality. A girl acts really into you, then two minutes later ignores you to make out with another guy, then ends up going home alone. Sounds crazy right? My boyfriend even said that Argentine men are supposedly really good at business because they have to sell themselves (not literally) to get girls. I have no idea why this is the case, but many of my American male friends had a hard time with girls there. On the other hand, some did really well. You just have to get over the fact of having been raised in a very PC culture, and pretend like the women's lib movement never happened, which of course it didn't in Argentina. Get back in touch with your manly side, and trust me, you will never have a lonely night. Good luck!
Oh, also, buenos Aires is very much NOT socially conservative in comparison to other places in Latin America
