How far in advance should I apply for a teaching position to allow time for everything that needs to be done, like the interview and the visa and work permit and everything? I realize it's different from country to country. Again, right now, I'm looking at Turkey and Japan, mostly. Right now, I'm just getting everything in order and I just wanted to know how far out I need to actually start contacting schools and sending out resumes. Thanx in advance.

Are you going to interview in your home country or the country where you are headed? If it's your own home country, you will be stuck with the rare recruiting interviews that take place, and it may be best just to contact them to see when they come. It may be only once or twice a year.

Figure on 4-8 weeks to get a work visa after you have been hired. How much time your employer gives you to come here after you've been hired may range from that length of time to 3 months, depending on his needs. Beware of places that want you to fly over in just a couple of weeks after you've been hired, with promises to help you process your work visa after you arrive.

I'm planning on interviewing with JET and AEON while I'm here in the states. I'm also going to look over the want ads on this site and contacting schools in Turkey and any other country that catches my eye. I'm planning on taking a certification course through Bridge-Linguatec and they say they can hook me up with a school. If all that fails, as a last resort, I thought I'd just fly out to Turkey with the names of some schools and enough money to live on for a few months and ask around.
