Hello,

I would really appreciate a response regarding this if possible.

I am from the U.S.A. and am trying to obtain a working visa for a company teaching position in Japan. According to the hiring manager, the Japanese Immigration is requiring an original diploma and an original transcript along with the contract signed and 2 photos. Does it sound correct about having the 2 original copies?

Didn't your company obtain a Certificate of Eligibility for you? If so, then all the diplomas and stuff would not be necessary - you would have given copies of all that to the company.

With a Certificate of Eligibility, all you need to apply for the visa is that, a passport, a passport photo and an address in Japan (I used the company's address, as I don't have my own yet). You can even get the application on line.

We are actually in the early stages and trying to get the Certificate. It turns out that Immigration denied my photocopied diploma and requested an original, so I'm assuming a certified copy of the diploma from the University should work. I hope so since I don't want to send the original original.

I had to supply my original diploma, but was not asked for transcripts.

If you can't supply your original, don't plan on a photocopy working. It might, but there are many places where you can buy faked diplomas and degrees, so people are becoming more wary these days. Certify the photocopy if you can to give it a more official look.

I had an employer (not immigration) as me for my original degrees when I was job hunting. Since I had not even been interviewed at that time, I refused politely. They asked if I could supply official transcripts as a substitute. Problem solved.

Thank you for the responses regarding the diploma issue. Turns out that the photocopy is going to work. Now I am confused whether a Certificate of Eligibility would enable me to enter Japan without a return ticket back to my home country, or would I still enter with a tourist visa/return ticket since the official visa probably won't be processed by then.

Thank you...so I am using a return ticket back to Japan ( purchased as an open round trip from Japan last Summer) and haven't purchased a return ticket back to the USA yet. Do you think a ticket flying back to Seoul would be o.k for Immigration to let me in to Japan on a tourist visa?

I was just getting ready to make a big move to Japan, and I did the daft thing of losing my original degree. I now have to get it replaced, and it will take a few weeks minimum.

Will this be a showstopper? Could I secure a job in Japan and then present my original degree later?

It's my understanding that you need an official transcript and an official diploma ( according to one immigration staff in Tokyo) but just recently I received the o.k. for the copy of my diploma with a little persuasion. I had 2 years previous work experience in Japan so maybe that helped too.

I had to send my original degree, as well. For what it's worth, though, you can just reorder a degree from your U's Registrar's Office. It will look like the original. It may, however, run you a good $30.

I have original transcripts and a photocopy of my degree..hopefully that will do in the meantime until I receive my replacement parchment.
