there are youth hostels in japan. might be a nice way to see places. not sure if it will work for me this trip, but i think i'll try it when i move there. about 3000 yen a night (or is that 30000) i think it's about $30, but you all know the exchange rate. |

If you are in Okayama, I highly recommend staying in any one of these places:

They are really great places maintained by the prefectural government to promote tourism in the countryside, at only 2500 yen per night. I've stayed at four of them and had a great time. |

i've used the hostel just outside of fukokua (kushu) and it was just wonderful. a large western-style house in a beautiful area not far from the subway. better than a cubicle hotel.

this really helps! thanks! i'm from the west coast so a trip to japan is sounding somewhat affordable. maybe that's a way for me to decide which part of japan i need to go to. |

If you're planning on visiting Kyoto, and you should, Utano YH to the N.E. of the city, nestling under the mountains in bamboo forest, is well-run friendly and generally by far the best. about 2500 per night. |
