Back on topic, I'd say it needs:
More public affection.
A less anal postal system (i.e. if my name isn't on the letter box, don't return my mail! The address is correct for crying out loud!).
Less racism and sexism.
Some serious television programs. Honest to God, almost all the "adult" programing here would be considered kids stuff back in Australia!
Later trains (2am maybe?)
People that cover their mouths when they sneaze and close their mouths when they eat. |

What Japan needs is for people to work less and enjoy life more !!
I second Jim's idea of having a siesta here, that would be great.
But then again, it might just make them work until 2 a.m. instead of midnight
Crikey, there's more to life than work!
Yes public affection would be great....
In fact, if you're upset about the lack of it, why don't you add to it next time you are out in the city.... |

Hi Mr. Dub,
http://www.davidsdeli.co.jp
Nearest station is Shirokane Takanawa on the Namboku line. It's well worth the trip. The hummus and felafel is fantastic! |

Hilarious juxtaposition there. Was it intentional? |

I hear what you're saying, but the "Japanese way" of working hard, staying loyal, working overtime, etc. is embedded in its culture. So I don't see this changing anytime soon, unless the government decides it is really unhealthy and steps in.
After all, Japan is where it is today because of the hardwork and "samurai" spirit so to say. Just look at the recovery and economic boom after WWII. |

As to all night trains, NYC's subway runs all night.
Mexican restaurants in Tokyo, strongly recommend Fonda de la Marugada. Great place with Mexican decorations, Mexican staff, chefs, etc. A bit expensive, only open for dinner, strongly suggest reservations for Friday and Saturday nights (up to a month in advance).
Another place that springs to mind is in Harajuku, close to Wendi's (the restaurant is in the basement on the same side street across the street from Wendi's)on Omotesando avenue on the left when you are walking away from Harajuku station. Don't order a tabehodai set, much better to order ala carte. Avoid some of the Japanese fusion items, the more usual Mexican food does feature refried beans (which most Japanese seem to think is worse than naato ) and the margarita menu has a large punch bowl size, definately a 3-5 drink drink and stronger than usual (the Mexican waiter working at that time told me the owners wanted it made that way)!
As to changes,
all night trains
far less discrimination
betteracceptance of foreign 'international' credit cards (some places here still only accept Japanese credit cards)
better acceptance of the ESL community as professionals (including by some of their own) |

YES. I have been so frustrated by not being able to use my credit cards. I went to a JAL office to buy a plane ticket the other day and they wouldn't take any of my credit cards. Mind you, I do live in the sticks, but there is only one department store in town that I know of that will accept my cards. |

Forget that! Day light saving time is the stupidest concept of thought of! Besides during the summer in Japan, the sun doesn't sent until late at night. |

Uhh...it IS really unhealthy. After all, "Karoshi" is a Japanese term.
Not to mention the destruction of the family unit thanks to this ridiculous system of overtime.
People say it has always been like this....not so!
Japan, before the war, was mostly an agricultural and fishing society....this absurd system of working insane hours really started after WW2 !
Actually, a lot of Japanese people are sick and tired of what's going on and are becoming freeters and NEETs.
In reality, Japan doesn't have the samurai spirit you talk about...and it's no longer necessary to work such hours.
Japan should focus on becoming a lifestyle superpower, not an economic one as it already is. |
