Hi there
i was wondering if anyone could give me advice on the necessity of vaccinations before coming to Costa Rica, personally i prefer a natural approach to health/medicine but i dont want to be stupid. Is it important to get particular vaccinations??
Also some advice on the best way to travel with money when coming to Costa Rica e.g. travellers cheques then open a bank account straight away, visa etc etc ?? At first i will be heading in the Heredia direction.
Any advice on these subjects would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Mia

Coming from Canada i was required to get Yellow Fever. If i travel to a zone in South America that is deemed a yellow fever zone, then i would not be allowed back into Canada without having this shot.

i also got Hep A and Hep B and Typhoid. There is no shot against Denge and i chose not to bring Malaria pills with me. If i do end up traveling to an area that is deemed a Malaria risk, then i will decide if i will start the Malaria pills which are easily available here. I also decided against the rabies shots.

You should check with the health dept. of the country youre coming from to see what is necessary as far as they are concerned.

As far as carrying travelers cheques. I would leave your money in your account and bring at least two atm cards. Bring enough U.S. cash to get you through a few days. U.S. is accepted everywhere. The only problem ive had here is from a machine eating my card. Money can be withdrawn in U.S. or colones and this makes withdrawals for traveling to Nicaragua and Panama very easy.
If you use your visa , you will need money in your account to pay your visa bills with.

As for a great homestay in Heredia you can check out my posting titled Need a Homestay . Theres a few other posters from Daves staying there right now and maybe they could pm you or post their impressions, and tell you how they like it. To contact them in HEredia, email Hector at [email protected] or [email protected]
Good luck
cheers
