Post International Women's Day depression has set in and it's being reinforced by a quote from today's The New Anatolian.
Get this: "In Izmir women's NGOs held a ceremony to celebrate the day with Izmir Governor Oguz Kagan Koksal delivering a speech after a wreath-laying ceremony. He stated that International Women's Day symbolizes a major process that started on March 8, 1857.
"Half the population is female and therefore ignoring women means ignoring half the country," stated Koksal, *******"Women bring beauty, peace and happiness so they have to be involved in politics as well as other fields of life."
So should I be positive about this and no longer attempt to be productive at work? Maybe get involved in politics as the AK Party appears to have given the go-ahead? Or just get hold of Prozac like a great many women in this country? Have returned to considering Turkish males low on the evolutionary scale...... |

I read something recently about the abuse of women in Turkey(sorry I can't remember where I read it.) But there was a recent report saying that most physical abuse was not in the East where you would think. But in Istanbul, Izmir and Ankara. It suggested there was a correlation between money(read power) and abuse. if the man earned alot of money then he thought he had the right to beat up his wife So ladies if you want to be safe from abuse marry a TEFLer. |

I've read similar statistic, dmb. Not just for here, but worldwide.
It makes sense to me, though at the same time I wonder how much these statistics are affected by unreported abuse cases, or for Eastern Turkey, how many of those women don't even think of it as abuse but as 'warranted discipline' or 'a day in the life...'

In a simlar vein, I remember when people were trying to figure out what advantage the French had re: health. It seems that because their recorded incidences of heart attacks were so much lower than N.America, then it must be something they were eating... Or drinking... Then they figured out that the reason for the gap in the stats was that the French were recording many heart attacks as 'sudden deaths'... |
