They ought to put a sealed partition between the smoking section and the non smoking section of the restaurants and macdonalds especially. Geeze the way people smoke here it's hard to find a place where the smoke doesn't waft over to the non smoking section.

They should also kick the guys out of the coffee shops who seem to spend all day there with their laptops and buisness gear. They have either lost their jobs or are too stresed out to go home to do their work.

A lot of starbucks coffee shops have nice big comfortable seats and many people hang on to them for hours because they have nowhere else to rest. kick em out after an hour or so so someone else can use em.

University accomodation should be a little bigger, because a lot of students seem to like doing their work in places like starbucks coffee shops

Frigging intercity buses should have fixed prices and not up them during busy times. G--d---. Seats could be a little bigger too. Maybe the seats on the local trains could be more comfortable too.

for coffee I like Tully`s since smokers have their own room, and Excelsior (at least some of them) have 2-3 floors, and smokers get their own floor.
The one in Kobe I used to go to a lot when I was on vacation.

Smoke Free Restaurants is a MUST not just for us but for the poor workers here! It must be costing a fair bit of the countries medical budget dealing with all the tabacco related illnesses.

Now, I can't believe I forgot to mention this, but something needs to be done about all these women who can't walk in high heels. I just don't get it it. Women of all ages back home seem to do fine but 4/5 Japanese women seem to drag and scrape their feet on the sidewalk almost losing balance and walking at an incredibly slow pace which slows down EVERYONE else. These women are the reason it takes so damn long to go up and down stairs at train stations. Don't mother's teach their daughters these things here???

BradS,

You are too funny! There are no lessons involved... Laughing But if they are indeed constantly tripping or going over on their ankles then women who can't walk in high heels will also soon become a burden on the Japanese Health Care system.

Sushi,

I couldn't agree with you more about the comfy chairs at Starbucks! There should be a time limit...

And to all those who posted about the smoking situation. That was actually an interview question about my ability to adapt to life in Japan! It is the issue I think I will find hardest to face. Confused

Nooooo! I worked at an eikaiwa once and the manager turned a blind eye to the fact that all the teachers would pop off to Starbucks for four hour lunch breaks. As long as we were back in time for the evening lessons he didn't care as the Japanese staff had the interviews and office stuff all sewn up.

God knows what would have happened if the 'trainers' had found out.

Once a Starbucks worker went round with a little horn waking up all the sleeping salary men. I'm sure they used to turn the air-con right down too Laughing

I was living in Sendai and for the life of me I couldn't find a place that sold a bench to do bench press and a barbell and weights. I just could not find anything. The sports shops had the odd dumbells, but no barbells. I couldn't believe it. Was that Sendai or is it nation wide. I ended up joining a gymnasium, but I would still rather have had my own set.

I wanted to go back to Korea just to buy a set. Probably would have been cheaper after having to fork out what I did at the gymnasium.

Japan needs a lot of Outback Steakhouses and TGI Fridays. They got the Starbucks and the MacDonalds, so how come it's taking them so long to get the others.

I also noticed in Sendai that there are these big African doods standing at specific locations in the main malls. They're always there. I think they ought to carry a sign saying just what it is they are doing. If they got em in Sendai then I am sure they got em in other cities too.

Yesterday I was stopped and taken home by 2 japanese undercover policeman. To check if I was one overstayer! To look on my passport.

THey stopped me just because I LOOK FOREIGN!!!!
They love the fact that here there are no discrimitanion laws!

F**K THEM ALL. I HATE THEM NOW. THAT WAS STUPID- THE WAY THEY TREATED ME - THE WAY THEY TALKED TO ME.
If they want to arrest foreigners, TAKE SOME ENGLISH LESSONS FIRST.
They are Unable to ask me questions. How the hell can they do this?
Just because I look Foreign.
Thas was here in Tokyo.
That was stupid!

JAPAN NEEDS TO STOP HAVING STUPID POLICEMAN< TAKE ENGLISH LESSONS< STOP RACISM.
They did not like just because I am white. I did not do anything wrong!

Yes, I've heard about the smoking situation in Japan, especially in the clubs and bars. As my friend said, "it's what Toronto was like about three years ago". Looks like I'll need to be very pro-active in taking my allergy medication so I don't end up being overly congested.

Maybe Japan needs those old "Kiss a non-smoker - Taste the difference" ads from the 1980's.

Regarding cops, I think they are pressured to make a big deal of foreigners. However, I'll be surprised if I ever get stopped in Fukoka, but then I don't go in to town much. However, I carry a notepad and will be asking any policemen that stop me to write down their names on it Wink

With the cops, you actually have the right to ask for their ID as well and their names. Normally this will get them off their power trip.

I'm assuming you didn't have your alien card on you. If you did there was no reason for them to follow you home. It's still racist. But they are trained to do this in police training. A Japanese friend of mine decided to become a policewoman and it's amazing how much anti-gaijin crap they're fed.

With the smoking, the police should crack down on reinforcing these laws! I see people smoking on platforms right next to the coppas! What the Hell's going on?!? Anyone else realise that most of Shinjuku's streets are now smoke free? Well, legally anyway.

For everyone who wrote a post about smoking. The other day in Tokyo I stopped in a restaurant for a beer while waiting for my train. I noticed it had a non-smoking section. It was one table! No lie! I even asked the waiter if that was the only non-smoking table. He said yes.
I had a good laugh imagining a group of non-smokers hoping to get the table or they would be forced to smoke! What is the purpose of having one table non-smoking?
I have to admit though, Japan is a lot better about having non-smoking then it was 10 years ago.
