Hey guys, Well I am coming to Tokyo in September (wanted to be sooner but dnt get my degree till Aug!!)
Anyway, I know this Q has prob been answered in the past but I am looking for some recent info 2006 style!! lol
I will be on 260000 yen, accom is up to 78000 and insurence 6600 aprox! so that leaves 175400yen!! Really, is that enough to have a decent life in the worlds most expensive city???
I enjoy going out, but am not going to piss my money up the wall!!
But is it really enough to enjoy myself, buy that new top once in a while, go out with friends etc!?!?!
Cheers guys! |

Rent I believe is GROSS so you will have tax taken out as well. You can live on it but you wont get rich. You just have to watch your spending. Go out three nights a week its easy to spend 15-20,000 yen. A beer is 600 yen as well as taxis fares etc
Here is link to some Tokyo prices
I cant really tell you unless I know what your lifestyle and spending habits are like. Transport to work will also be paid for. |

From the look of those figures, I'm guessing you are going to be working for NOVA (with its own insurance program). Bear in mind one thing...
After you quit NOVA, you will have to change insurance plans. If you decide to switch to the national health insurance program, you will have to pay for all the years you were on NOVA (up to 3, I think), as if you were on the NHI plan then. Yup, double dipping. It might be better to switch over now. First year is 2500 yen/month, and this goes up tenfold in the second year, but it's better than paying twice, don't you think?
As for living on that salary, c'mon. Thousands of us do it. Some save as much as 100,000 yen/month. Some save zilch. Depends on what you do with it. Go out twice a week to bars and drink conservatively, and you could eat up 50,000 yen/month easily, leaving you with 125,000 for phone, and anything else in life. |

No, it is not.
Unless you were a poor university student not long ago and can continue that sort of lifestyle. |

I used to find I spent on average about 5,000 yen a day. I ate out pretty much every meal, went to karaoke a lot, went to Izakaiyas a lot and bought pretty much whatever I wanted.
If you're a party animal or heavy drinker you're in trouble, otherwise a good standard of living and a few big nights out a month should be no problem. |

This is one of the greatest myths about teaching here! The "as long as you stay away from the beer, women and ponies you will be fine" chatter. |

I used to save 80-100,000 yen a month and still have quite a good time. When I didn't send money home I always had a surplus at the end of the month.
Not sure how I did it but I rarely struggled. I think towards the end of a heavy month Matsuya and my loose coin collection stopped starvation. |

NOVA have alot of schools in Tokyo and if you request Tokyo you have a good chance of being placed there. If you want to work for NOVA that is. |

Hi Vallilo,
260 000 yen is not a whole lot of money and 78 000 (plus utilities etc) is a big chunck out of it. Lots of people live on this kind of money though. You have to remember that it's a FIRST job... You don't have a whole lot of bargaining power at this point.... And it's NOT the ONLY job you will ever have in your lifetime. You can change jobs! Once you get settled, you can look around for something better. There are also lots of opportunities in Tokyo for part time work to supplement your income. |

I will also add that once you take out your rent, utilities, food and transport you dont have all that many expenses. Any other money is for luxuries and you can budget as needed. You dont need to go out three nights a week or buy high priced bentos at a convenience store. there are students in Japan who live on a fraction of what NOVA teachers make.
You wont get rich but you wont starve either. If you want to live the high life you either cut back on expenses or earn more by getting side jobs. the bills still have to be paid, but its up to you how much you have left after partying and entertainment.

If you don't have to be in Tokyo proper, you can find cheaper rents. I've seen places an hour east or west out of Tokyo, one room and loft, or two small rooms, for Y50-60000 a month. All you really need to get started is a futon, a fridge and a tv, and those are cheap to come by.
Lucky for people coming in March/April, it's warm enough you don't need heat right away, so no air-con, no problem.
I couldn't stomach the rents in Tokyo. Y70000+ for an over priced shoe box? No chance. I commute an hour from concrete jungle to a bamboo thicket in NW Chiba.
I paid Y50,000 for a semi-furnished place in Chiba City once.
Eating out kills your budget. I bring homemade bento every day, and eating out is a treat. I figure I still spend Y35,000 on food. |
