As the subject of this thread indicates, this is a purely hypothetical question: What would actually happen to someone caught working (more specifically, teaching in a language centre, home tutoring etc... ) illegally in Hong Kong?

I know that working without a visa is illegal, yet everyone knows it is not uncommon amongst lower paid 'teachers' in Hong Kong. Hypothetically, what would someone actually go through if they were deported? Stanley Prison and then chucked onto the next flight home? Given a grace period in which to organise their own journey home? What exactly does being deported entail?

No, I'm not working illegally, and no, I'm not even in Hong Kong anymore. I am however trying to write a fictional tale of an illegal English teacher and her subsequent deportation. I've hit a wall, however, in the fact that I don't know what exactly would happen.

If anyone knows or can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. I've tried looking on government websites yet keep coming across info telling me that 'people without the correct working visa will be deported'. I'm not trying to open up a discussion on the rights or wrongs of illegal work in Hong Kong, I simply want to know that practicalities of deportation. Can you help? I hope so!

Thanks a lot

Liam

The answer is.....

Stanley prison, plus one month of dreading shower time Shocked followed by deportation.

The immergration service doesn't mess around in HK.

Thanks Chris. How did you find this out? Any info on anyone it's happened to? Any more details? Just want to know all I can.

And I repeat, this is purely hypothetical

Thanks

I knew of some ilipinas it happened to.

Also whilst waiting for a passport renewal, I say an English boss dropping off his English II who was promptly taken away behind the counter.

The HK Immergration authorities don't mess around, they are above board. I don't know how much if any difference nationality will make. I assume it would all depend on how long expired the visa was.

I know occasionally schools are inspected, but I don't know if the Immergration Department does so, unless to look for II children.

My 2 cents, don't mess up, tell your friend to get the correct sponsership.
