*******WARNING TO ALL PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS*******

Speaking from personal experience in dealing with this school I can recommend/comment on the following tactics used by VATC:

1) They are deceptive in all of their recruitment & contractual
terms to suit themselves -- they are manipulative even after you
have negotiated a contractual arrangement -- in other words,
their contracts are NOT worth the paper their printed on;

2) They make promises they do NOT keep;

3) They do NOT value LOYALTY & GOOD SERVICE; their 'MO' is to
'use you' and 'take all of what teachers are willing to give' and then
want more. Working for them is a ONE-WAY STREET!

4) The AMERICAN in their name would lead everyone to believe that
they use American materials -- they do not.

If you would like any specific details, please direct your inquiry to the writer. I'll be happy to share my experience with you.

Are you quite sure? I mean, as the vast majority of schools in Saigon are paragons of academic and management excellence, I find your statements rather shocking. Shocked

It is this level of superiority that allows the gov't to demand such high standards of teachers to obtain the highly coveted Vietnam work permit.

Only the very very best are allowed to teach in the ivory towers of Vietnamese language schools. For most of us, t'is only a wisp of a dream that will never come true.

I'm sure VATC meets the most exacting of international standards and is one of the finest language institutes in all of Asia.

Truly, my friend you are highly privileged to have been allowed a glimpse of the hallowed hallways of this esteemed organization.

I second j-jake's follow-up to Sigmoid's post: Sigmoid you must be joking.

I have heard bad things about VATC privately from my firsthand experiences, people I know have worked there, from the public (in the forms of the press, EFL discussion forums) and just about every concievable source of information available.

Even funnier than the previous post.

Sigmoid: you should either get your ear to the ground of reality in the TEFL scene in Vietnam or start your own stand-up comedy routine with your VATC material.

Well, yeah... Laughing

But, my main (and serious) point was that no one should be the least bit surprised to find really crappy language schools in Vietnam.

They should be shocked though to find out what is now required for the privilege to work there.

Well, Sigmoid, I appreciated the sarcasm, anyway.

But a serious question. Why is the crackdown on teachers without permits (which is most of them) happening now? I've been away from VN for awhile, thinking about returning, and now I am not sure what to think. Any theories?

Not sure. Maybe has something to do with them wanting to join the WTO or something.

I was thinking about returning too, just for a bit of a change, but that idea's been put off indefinitely. I don't mind getting a permit as long as the process is reasonable, but from what I've read/heard it's a bit much just to teach in HCMC which I never thought was a particularly great experience anyway.

Having received dozens of applications from people who cannot write in acceptable English, I am not surprised to see ELTeachers [or would-be's] unable to distinguish between a sigmoid and condersleazer rice.

Pity those poor VN students, digging so deep to be taught by morons. Hey guys, how about taking some pop song and removing some of the meaningless lyrics? That should pass half an hour.

A lot of the grizzles on Dave's are justified [eg SITC] but remember that a lot of "teachers" could provide the material for negative reports. The gentleman who came in after more than one beer and played the same silly song and then shouted for an hour left without paying his bills. SITC deserved him but the students and his honest landlady deserved better. An American gentleman who offers an on-line tesol qualification did the same thing [minus the beer - he was a mormon] in Kalimantan despite having had an easy schedule from a decent boss.

Ha! Got that off my chest!
