Hi Guys Smile

Any help here is very appreciated. What would you say are the pro's and con's of doing the Tesol certificate in your home country compared to doing it overseas (i.e. the country one plans to teach)?

This issue seems to come up from time to time - with quite a few differing opinions.

I say take it overseas - particularly in the country where you would like to teach. For several reasons:

It gives you an opportunity to network a bit, often right at the TEFL school, and get to know the job market.

Usually it is cheaper overseas.

Some programs will have a local component targeted to the local population, something you won't get at home.

Many schools recruit directly from the TEFL schools.

It gives you chance to get to know if you actually like the city/country/culture - before you commit to a one-year contract.

You hear from the other students and the school, about the best places locally and regionally, to look for work, and the places to avoid.

Adds up, to me, to being worth doing it overseas.

A good program won't give you much time to get out and do much - but the schools themselves, the teachers, and the other students will offer a wide range of information and expertise that you might find VERY useful - and that you typically just can't get at home.

There are a few current threads asking this same question. I think they're in the newbie forum.

I agree with tedkarma. When you take the course overseas, especially if you take it in the country that you actually want to teach in, you can use the time you get acclimated and start looking for housing and jobs, both of which the course providers should help you with.
