Most of Japan has much hotter and more humid summers than Toronto, where I lived for 3 years. It really is like an oven for 6 weeks and it doesn't cool down at night so you are constantly taking cold showers. The winter is much milder - like Vancouver. I lived on the Japan Sea Side in Kanazawa for a year and the winters there are terrible - ice, snow, sleet. The pacific ocean side is much better.
For cities, I think Hiroshima is great, but a bit out of the way. As others have said Kansai is very central and easy to live in. I live in Yokohama now, just outside Tokyo, and quite like it, but if you're looking for a quieter kind of place, this isn't it. |

Unfortunately for the original poster, you don't have much of a choice when it comes to cities. You're going to take work where work is given, or not take it at all. The market is flooded. The employers have the upper hand. Your criteria for a city fit the exact same mold that I've heard most teachers mention for their desired location. Example: Good luck finding anything worthwhile in Fukuoka. |
