Explaining language in terms of chunking makes much more sense when looking at First Nations languages in North and South America. I was taught prefixes, infixes, suffixes and circumfixes of Lushootseed, but would one really think that a native speaker of Lushootseed learned her language by learning all these afixes?
Of course not, so learning "walking around gathering fire wood" as one word, a chunk, just seems so unfackingbelievably obvious. |
