I am 46 years old and I have been teaching in Asia for over 6 years. I am from America and I have a Bachelor's degree with a Tefl Certificate. I am looking to teach outside of China because quite frankly I need a rest from it. I have a chinese wife and we want to buy an apt in china but we need more money so I want to go out side of china to teach for 2 years then come back to buy the apt. I have applied to schools in Japan and Taiwan but it seems I am too old. I have applied to places in the middle east but I don't have enough credentials to satisfy them. I have applied to india for working in the call centers but have not heard from them. In south Korea my transcripts don't have the special seal on them so it seems I can't go there. Where can I go to save enough money for what I want to do? If anyone has any suggestions or any job openings they know of any help would be appreciated. Thank you I can go as soon as I am needed.

No you aren't. You're younger than me, and I'm still working in Japan!

One major problem might be that you are applying from China. Unless you can come here for an interview, your only other bet is to return to the USA and interview with the few conversation schools that visit.

Seal???

Why could you not just simply contact your old university and purchase some Official Transcripts?

Theres seems to be more than your lettin on regarding your situation.

Anyhow, Official Transcripts and Your Official Degree is more than enough regarding Korea. And both can be had for little money. I Know my college the officials are free and even before that they only cost a few dollars each. And I think a Copy of your degree is about 25-50 dollars.

Is my suggestion an option for you???

There is nothing more than what I told you. I already have my transcripts
which I purchased 3 years ago from my old college why should I have to purchase more when I already have at least 8 just to satisfy some new regulation from South korea. From the response about Japan I agree with you if I am not there then they will not hire me but going back to America to interview for Japan is not an option for me but thanks for the suggestion.

You are not too old - 54 here and going strong.

Taiwan and Korea are probably your best possibilities.

Just order some new transcripts - over the phone with a visa card - though you might have to fax an authorization.

On the Korean boards a few people had trouble with the seals and came up with some unique solutions . . . do a search there. One - was just put in in another envelop and stamp something across the flap!

Similar problem with a friend of mine - her UK Uni - doesn't issue her transcripts in sealed envelops . . .

Don't have to. Uh, unless you want to get a job in Korea of course.

Hopefully you learned in China that there are often unreasonable, illogical things that must be done to satisfy bureaucracies . . . Tis the life of an expat.

Get over it - and order the transcripts. . .

How long ago did you apply in India? It sometimes takes them a while to get back to you. I worked in India last year in a call center and I didn't hear back for a few weeks.

And some of my co-workers there were in their sixties!

Qualifications required to work for unis or military-type places in Saudi can be selective -- but you might give the language schools a shot. Places like Wall Street and Berlitz have a presence in the mid-east as well, and while salaries aren't in the 60k US range, you might be able to find work for around 40k with your BA and TEFL.

And check out some lucrative but not-often-considered countries like Azerbaijan -- they have oil money there, and the occasional job that shows up on the 'net sounds pretty good. One or two outfits in Kazakhstan teach air traffic contollers and oil related as well - very well paid.

This year, I too, had to order transcripts. I had my best luck just picking up the phone and calling. Got someone's name who was VERY helpful - got it all done.

Try using a telephone.

Apply for Saudi. Expect around $30K, a little more if your bachelors was in English or a Foreign Language. Photocopies of transcripts will do, but expect to have to go back to the States to process the visa.

I spent five years in Saudi. You'd better have unimpeachable documents - or you'll not be going.

Fantasy to expect $60 even with an MATESOL - or at least an extra-ordinary job - with unusual qualifications.

A BA/BS might get you $30k.

Might as well go to Korea where you can at least have a beer and females in your classes . . . and save almost the same amount - and maintain your mental health.

Very Happy Smile Yes---mental health. Not to be taken for granted, that. I've seen a good few people in Cambodia who arrived from Saudi having lost most of their marbles. Hey, ask William Sansom.

Another thing not to take for granted is one's teeth. A woman was telling me last nite about her trials with a dodgy denturist. I won't rehearsde the details (heard quite enuff last nite) but her advice was to find a denturist who has been in business a long time--still no guarantee, but it helps--and also to ask around for word-of-mouth (sic) recommendations. Again, I'll spare you the grisly details of her story..... just remember yr teeth!!! Dont take em for granted!!
