This weekend coming is a 4-day holiday for me. It's enough time to run off to Oaxaca for the weekend, but I don't feel like sleeping two nights on a bus in exchange for 3 days in Oaxaca. I'm probably going to catch the bus to Puerto Escondido (just two hours away).

For semana santa I was thinking of going to Campeche and Edzna. That's quite a trip from here (about 20 hours each way), so I was thinking of stopping at the halfway point (Villahermosa) for a night. The trouble is that I've been told there's nothing hermosa about Villahermosa. Campeche is supposed to be quite a pleasant surprise and is still not well-known to tourists, so I'm sure I'll enjoy it there.

I'm going to be avoiding beach areas of Mexico. If I don't simply stay in the city, I might go check our some of the hinterland out there. A family member has a place in Cuernavaca, another a place in Aguascalientes, but that' a little farther out. There's a fair in neighboring Texcoco I hear....maybe see what that's about.

But I do have a larger nicer car, which is a really pain in the a $ $ rather than a good thing Evil or Very Mad

but my girls don't fight in the car anymore because they don't have to sit practially on top of each other.

I'm hoping to get to get a chance to read over the 4 day weekend (excitment!), and for Semana Santa my husband will be coming. He's not coming this weekend because he was just here last week.

Drangon, Morelia is quite nice! But I've heard good things about Honduras too.

I'm thinking of going to Guatemala, to the Lago Atitlan area. I guess it will be a pseudo -honeymoon. I've always wanted to go there from university days way back, when I used to plant trees in the summer and the hard core vets would tell us about spending the winters in San Pedro, chllling out and collecting pogie.
Does anyone know what the conditions are like now after the damage from the hurricane last year? Is it safe to travel? I'm hearing conflicting stories. I'm a pretty rugged traveler, and my wife tries hard( she tells me she used to be 'totalmente palacio' but after meeting and living with me she's now at about 20% palacio).
Is it way cheaper in Guatemala than Mexico? I don't usually travel on tight budgets but we're fairly broke right about now and it's either go to DF and hang with the suegros or attempt a trek around the lake. We've been having insanely hot weather lately so the high altitude sounds great.
I'd love to hear from anyone who's been to the area, thanks.

As for the upcoming break, which for me will start this afternoon at 1pm, an hour and 45 mins away he says chomping at the bit,we're heading off to Xico,Veracruz to a friend's ranch. I hope it's coolish over there as well...

Staying in Peru, and probably going to Cajamarca. It's the only place on my current list of "places to see in Per�" that is really doable in a 4-day weekend.

Sleep and read!

Other than that- no plans. As some of you know, I'm currently wrestling with a rather big contract to offer English training to a (rather heavily staffed) government agency. This means that all my free time right now is spent running around at full tilt, trying to plan our program, curriculum, staff needs, schedules, etc. And as of next week, I think it's going to get hard to say exactly which of Ecuador's two major cities I actually live in. Hotels and travel are NOT my current idea of relaxation.

I plan to spend the holiday sitting in my apartment, drinking beer, and getting to know my girlfriend before she forgets what I look like.

But enjoy your trips, everybody.

Take care in Cajamarca! Only place in Peru I've been robbed... then again it was Carnaval and I was too busy soaking everybody with my super soaker water pistol to see the light fingers creeping into my pocket! The nearby policeman just laughed so I soaked him too!

It's Huaraz for me. Mountains and greenery. Much needed after the desert coast of Peru. And then its only a few weeks till I get my end of bimester break too!

Huaraz sounds nice, too. I'm going through snowboarding withdrawal, so all of my students keep telling me to go there. Sounds like you spend too much time hiking uphill with all of your gear and not enough time riding back down, though.

Thanks for the warning about Cajamarca! I will be careful.

Cajamarca seemed safe to me, many places are, though it helps if you don't look or talk like a gringo. Shorts, sunglasses and huge cameras are a big no-no.
