Ok Im a bit new at this.

When looking for a job many companies ask for a copy of my passport. I know that a current passport is important; however is it necessary to send it with my resume or is my passport going to be used for illegal purposes.

DON'T send your passport, just a scan or photocopy. No, it most likely will not be used for illegal purposes(????).

As much as possible, send NO original documents overseas.

Not so much that they will be used improperly, but more that you are then obligated - and sometimes stuck - with whomever you sent them to.

If you change your mind, get a better offer, decide to not go, or even if you have an emergency - you are now stuck - and hoping they will be returned. And, since you have bailed out and perhaps put them out - they are often in no hurry to return your documents. Or, may not return them at all.

Take a look at http://tefldaddy.com/TEFL_Documents.htm for more information on the topic.
