Cash in hand?
Can you choose how you're paid?

Automatic deposit into your bank account. The only way you get paid cash in hand is from private students or under the table work. |

Typically employers pay directly to your bank account. Some require you to open an account at a specific bank, some don't. |

Some want to avoid bank transfer fees by having all accounts at the same branch and I have had employers make me pay the fees if I used a different branch (i.e. they would deduct it off your salary before they pay you)
YOu may end up getting an account at a distant far off branch.
PS Checks are not used in Japan. Direct credit for most language schools. |

Sorry Gordon, at least around here that's not quite true. Cash is perfectly acceptable in many companies and even the government , if you don't have a bank account to which they can deposit directly. I work for the city even and the BoE pays some staff cash.
Now having said that, chances are that there will be a LOT of pressure on you to open a bank account as soon as possible so they don't have to pay you cash... But I know a number of people who have refused no matter how hard they were pushed to open an account... But that's not necessarily good advice either. |
