All of us have jobs
most of us are long term residents and speak Japanese.

OK you didnt botch it. you came out here on a gamble and lost. The visa wasnt ready. Sought a job at a mom and pop language school that a nobody from nowheresville could probably get and it imploded on you.

Sh-it happens.

Was it not clear who they were getting? You were virtually hired sight unseen, by email. Miscommunications are bound to occur with no face to face interview. It was your choice to come out here based on what you knew. what did you know about the school before you got on the plane?

I cant speak for the others but there is no law that says one must necessarily be successful in ones home country first. Being an expat does not mean being a failure. I cant speak for the others, but I have a wife kids, own real estate and am now working on my second graduate degrees. If I can make it in a foreign country with a different language i can almost certainly make it anywhere else.

I didn't have a choice about working with jet lag.

I guess not. Its still illegal to work though and your employer should know that. They can not make you work on a tourist visa and you should at least have gone to immigration, or had a back up plan.

What employer makes you work a day after an international plane flight? Her bad.

Nova is a hole, I already know that, but I've already spent 70,000 yen on hotels and I need a bloody apartment.

You wont find an apartment without putting down about 4 months rent for key money or agents fees, Move to a gaijin hostel in osaka or Nagoya and you dont pay key money. rent is about 60-70,000 yen a month

ELT is a business here, a profit making enterprise. Students pay a lot fo money for lessons and schools like NOVA provide teachers, who need no more than a degree to get a work visa. Most teachers are not qualified language teachers and the average students wouldnt know the difference between a good teacher and a bad one. Not only that Japan is a monolingual, monocultural country where most students and Japanese have no experience with communicative language learning and dont know what it takes to learn a language. Deal with it.

If I ever meet any of you guys I'll beat the living #$#% out of you and realy give the Japanese authorities a reason to put me in jail.

Hahahah yeah you'll go far here. Ranting about the school not appreciating 'a real teacher' Rolling Eyes Laughing Welcome to Japan! All your indignation just goes to show how little you understand about the situation here. Ever think about listening and learning rather than yelling?

You think you are the first person in the history of the world to ever have to work the first day after stepping off the long plane flight? The first person to ever walk into a new job situation without all the information? Grow up. A lot of us managed to do it all without getting fired, or having a tantrum on an internet forum.

Keith, you are what Abufletcher calls a 'luxury import', An experienced. qualified teaching professional who is here like a square peg in a round hole.

You are out of your element as you are not back in Germany and the style of teaching you are used to is not a good fit for the way things work on the ground here.

professional jobs exist, but you are not going to find them a week after arriving, with no contacts and no Japanese ability.

the new semester has already started and you are chasing after the scraps as far as jobs go. Aside from the fact you have no work visa you have to spend up to a month, maybe two, finding a job that is a fit for you. Employers here are not going to bend over backwards or change their entire teaching curriculum to please you. Take it or leave it.

The goals, priorities, learning styles and attitudes or students are different than germany. here students pay because they want to get speaking practice with a foreigner and after 6 years of studying grammar most students are burnt out on English and actually hate it after high school. they simply want to let their hair down and enjoy it, teachers here want to make students come back for more. You can be professional but if you scare them off your employers wont be impressed. At the big 4 schools they dont expect teachers to be qualifed and experienced but hold students attention enough that they can feel sated after a lesson.

I have a friend teaching English in Frankfurt and students are totally different in temperament and attitude. Essentially you are like a fish out of water without a liferaft. No Japanese, no inside connections on where to look for jobs or how to find them. Reduced to chasing after jobs such as the big 4 or what you can find on Internet job sites. Too late for university or high school jobs.

I just decided not to go to Nova. I don't want to work for them, so why bother with the stupid interview?

Probably because you need a job and income.

There is an outfit in Osaka that hires teachers to work in companies. Some of the ones I know of in Osaka are:

Time T.I.
06-6354-9741

C.E.S.
066 346-7148 (?)

PACC Conversation school (H.O in Tokyo but i taught company classes in Kansai)

Fax 03-3353-7230

You may want to do a Google search or give them a call.

Obviously you guys are as moronic as the boss at GES!

I didn't botch anything. The school didn't know that they were hiring a teacher. They thought they were getting some out of work loser who couldn't make it in his own country, just like the lot of you I suspect!

I didn't have a choice about working with jet lag.

I have no idea what's up with the school in Fuji.

Nova is a hole, I already know that, but I've already spent 70,000 yen on hotels and I need a bloody apartment.

Europe does have standards for language teaching, I.E. The Common European Framework.

(deleted by me) Sorry

PISS OFF!!!

LOL. I just started reading this thread and I noticed that keith was at the same time systematically deleting all his posts. So I thought I'd race ahead to the last page and quote this one before he erased it so it would remain for posterity.

Good luck with the NOVA interview, big guy!

Certificate of Eligibility
?
If an applicant wishes to work, study, or live in Japan, he/she should in principle first obtain a Certificate of Eligibility. The Certificate of Eligibility is issued by the Ministry of Justice in Japan. To obtain a Certificate of Eligibility, the applicant must ask a sponsor in Japan (an employer, spouse, school, etc.) to contact the local immigration office and make an application on his/her behalf. The application must be made by a sponsor in Japan.

Once a Certificate of Eligibility has been obtained, the applicant should bring in his/her passport, one passport-sized photograph, and the original Certificate of Eligibility to the Embassy to apply for a visa.

Please note that Certificates of Eligibility expire after three months. An applicant must obtain his/her visa and arrive in Japan within three months of the issue date of the Certificate of Eligibility. If an applicant has not travelled to Japan before the expiry date, then a new Certificate of Eligibility must be obtained before applying for the visa and travelling to Japan.

Further information about visas can be obtained by contacting the Consular Section of the Embassy on 01-202 8309 or 8308 or [email protected] .
?
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs website also has a page linking to a range of practical information for anyone planning to visit Japan.
