How much do salaries range for full-time ESL teachers in language institutes and community centers, etc.? I am not asking about K-12, public/private school teachers -- but full-time teachers of adults.

Matt,

There is work such as that to be found at community colleges and language institutes, but I think you'll find that most jobs are part-time/adjunct only and range from the $12 to $30 per hour range. Of course it also depends where in NY State you are. That's why many people do go into K-12 situations, where full-time jobs with benefits and annaul salary increases exist.

The figures quoted are a bit low-for example, I have seen positions with Westchester and Rockland CC's at 38 an hour. But it is seasonal work without benefits, hence the desire of many to go the K-12 route. I got 50 an hour but funding for the fall term did not come through in time so when I got an offer for the fall I was already committed to working in China.

So then I guess the person who does adult-ed ESL in NYC/LI tends to be a full-time freelancer? Hardly justifies the costs of an adult track MATESOL. Sorry to hear it.

How much does a private institute pay a full-timer with benefits (if such a position exists, on the average?

The position does exist!

Most CCs or unis want an MA TESOL and a couple of years' experience in Higher Ed. I've seen salaries advertised from $30k to $45k, with full benefits, including tuition should you wish to pursue another Masters (say in Educational Leadership??). Incidentally, program directors don't seem to make much more than full-time teachers.

Some of the jobs in CA start out around $60k (of course the cost of living out there is outrageous). I would assume that salaries are higher in Hawaii. Sherri?
