One who chooses to teach must never cease to learn.

Wow! Where to begin?

The biggest change has been in how much I value my family. They have always been very important but I can't wait to see my daughter and Mom.

Knowing that I am capable of adapting to a completely foreign way of live has given me confidence I never had.

My family has always said what a great teacher I'd be. Never believed them. They were right! I have learned, thru many mistakes, that I have the ability and the desire to to teach these little kiddies.

I've realized how small of a space I really need to live in. Before coming to Korea I had a 2 bedroom apt with a big living area and kitchen. Now I have a small (read that as closet) 2 room apt.

I have really learned how to minimize my spending and maximize my saving.

Used to think I had to work WAY to many hours. Now I know for sure that was the truth. The thought of going back to a 50 hr work week is disgusting.

The other changes have been those most of us experience.

I've learned I can survive in tough situations-tougher than I would have ever thought.

Thought of another one--

I've stopped thinking about the "perfect" place and wondering where it might be. I've learned that the perfect place for me is a combination of all of the things that I have loved about the placess I've been, minus the things that may have annoyed me. Basically, I now see the potential for happiness and good times anywhere. It all depends on the job you get, the friends you make, the hobbies you develop, and your attitude.

In Japan I have learned how to tie my tennis shoes with enough slack in them so that I can more easily get in and out of them. Also, in public I have assumed a more Japanese demeanor in terms of how I stand, walk and act in general. I try not to occupy any more space than is absolutely necessary.

I would be very careful in making this assumption. I would like to see an openly gay person move to small town U.S.A and not be talked about behind his or her back.

In some areas people are accepting of other believes and then sometimes we just think they are because their believes are in reality similar to ours.

Gay people that choose to live in small-town America are probably rather closeted, anyway.

In the big scheme of things, I wouldn't care. If people aren't keeping you from finding a place to live, work, or physically threatening you then that's good enough. There are places in the world where that isn't true...and others where they execute people with differing beliefs.

Re being talked about in small town America...

Everybody gets talked about in small towns. Some more, some less, but getting talked about is pretty normal.

There is only one good thing about small town
There is only one good use for a small town
There is only one good thing about small town
You know that you want to get out

When youre growing up in a small town
You know youll grow down in a small town
There is only one good use for a small town

You hate it and youll know you have to leave

-----Lou Reed "Small Town"

Yeah, if you have green eyes, but the majority of the people in town have brown, they will talk about you...
If you are vegetarian, they will talk about you...
If you're over 30 and unmarried, they will talk about you...
If you've been married more than once, they will talk about you...
If you're been married more than two years and you don't have children...

In a way, its extremely similar to living abroad! Everyone is curious about you. Wink
