Please provide first-hand accounts of sushi in Japan.
1) How does it compare to sushi from your home country (U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia)?
2) Are there any strange fishes that could NEVER be found anywhere else but Japan?
3) How much is an average:
a) roll
b) order of sashimi
?

The fish was bought from the market the same day. I believe fish may be frozen in western countries, affecting the taste and texture.
2) Are there any strange fishes that could NEVER be found anywhere else but Japan?

It depends on how much and what you order as size and quantity is different. You might get 4-6 pieces for 1,000 yen.
Some 'sushi' are 200-300 yen each. |

1) it's fresher and more well-made
2) yes. tons. countless numbers.
3) totally depends. There is a huge range. You can go to hyakuen kaiten-zushi and stuff yourself silly at 100 yen a pop and it's still not bad, or you can go to an average small sushi place and pay 3000 for lunch, or an upscale place and lay down 10,000 for dinner, or you can go nuts and order toro slices at 2500 yen or more per bite.

Most of the sushi places around where I live are about 110 yen/plate. The fish are quite strange and I have never found california rolls here. The salmon rolls are excellent though. |

There's good sushi and bad sushi in Japan. The price of a meal ranges from fast food to several days salary. You can get things like California Rolls, but in Tokyo rolled sushi isn't very popular even basic ones like tekka maki. Osaka has a greater variety. |

Sushi in the States is usually overpriced and limited to salmon and tuna. Because of that, there are tons of Americanized Sushi, like California rolls (which, by the way, you CAN find in Japan all over the place - they are the cheap, childish sushi plates) and Philly rolls, etc.

No. But there is a huge variety.

a) Sushi comes, usually, in plates of 2 pieces, and the price ranges from 105 yen per plate, to 500+ yen, depending on where you go.
b) You can buy a small box of sashimi at the grocery store for about 300 yen (6 pieces), for your average tuna cut. |

I walked past a sushi rotary in London the other week and each plate was approximately three times the price of the same in Japan, plus each plate had a little plastic cover over the top to stop the fish drying out. This amused me greatly, because the first thing any Japanese person told me about sushi places was not to take the revolving dishes, but use them as a display model to order from. Of course the conveyer belt is part of the appeal outside Japan. |

Japanese sushi is unquantifiably better than sushi in the rest of the world! Depends where you go of course but here's a description of my local kaiten sushi bar in Ikebukuro...
All plates 130 yen, a massive selection of ever changing fish, large portions including otoro, chu-toro and bincho otoro. Now I've seen otoro outside of Japan about twice both times for unbelievably high prices. I have never ever, ever seen bincho otoro outside of Japan. It is the most succulent, melt in the mouth experience I've ever tasted...and for 130 yen
I'd say for the amount I could eat there for about 1200 yen I would have to pay close to 100 pounds ($200) for a feed of the same quality and quantity. And that's at an, albeit very good, kaiten sushi bar. if I was actually to spend a lot of money in Japan on sushi it would be like being hand fed from the horn of plenty by a choir of angels whilst sitting on a fluffy cloud.
All I could buy in the UK for 1000 yen (five pounds) is a can of coke, a soggy sandwich and a Kit-Kat. |
