I was sick of my 18 year old students not having English names so I told them they had 1 minute to think of one or else I would give them one.
The names they came up with?? See the subject heading of this post.
I can't tell you how much fun I had calling the same students over and over again during class.
A couple of boys decided that their name was super man. I kindly explained that, since I am superman, they have to be super woman.
The ones who wanted to be King had to be Queen because, you guessed it, I am king.
So the way to solve the problem is to give the students names.
There are lists of popular names on the internet. Shall we begin a list of our own?
I propose the following names:
For boys:
(Kitty kitty, Mrs. Hanky, spanky, )
For girls: (piipiipoopoo, liiliilaalaa, tiitiikaakaa.) |

I had God and Jesus in the same class. It was quite amusing for 3 minutes. The kids have no idea of the backgound of these names. |

Most of my students had common names previous teachers had given them or they chose themselves. If not I gave them a list of common names and meanings (as if English names had meanings) and let them choose. In my classes, a few boys and girls have names that when I call out it makes the rest of the class burst into laughter. I don't know where they came up with them.
Boys: Kaka, Wahaha, Automan, Mike Bibby, Hot Sauce, Aruba, Frog Mouse, Mr. Perfect, Harry Potter, Super Computer, Fishwood, Shumacher, Luberchun.
Girls: Icecream, Shakespeare, Shinichi, Juice, Chocolate.

Yes, absolutely. My (senior school) students have fun with their foreign names and don't take them too seriously. Some change them every few weeks - makes for a messy register, but I don't mind!
In my favourite class, there's Red Wolf, Number 1, Karl Marx, Shark, Dr Evil, So-So, Cool, George W Bush and Saddam.
And some don't want foreign names at all 'because we are Chinese', which is fine too. Though I confess I have trouble keeping a straight face when I call on Wang Ke. |

Pronounce it properly and it sounds nothing like what you think. |

Same with this one. Don't criticise what you don't understand [Bob Dylan], or can't pronounce [Super Mario]. |

Oh gosh, Super M, sorry if I offended you with this one. I do understand the meaning of the name Wang Ke actually (literally, King of Science, with many other cultural undertones). And I am pronouncing it correctly. I would delete my previous post, but you've quoted it now so that wouldn't achieve anything. Apologies if others have taken my comments badly too. Meant in fun. |

I think Bob has a good appreciation of word play, though perhaps he's not as crass as I. |

If so, it doesn't sound as "wanker". This word will no doubt get censored.
And Kes, if making fun of people's names, because those who can't use pinyin properly see them as "funny", is the point you're making, then I do lack a sense of humour. It's only the Chinese names I'm talking about here, BTW.
But yeah, I do need to lighten up.
These 8 hour teaching days back in Australia really get me tired.
Sorry guys. |

I find this as a real problem in China. I can't pronounce their Chinese names and if I do, I might mispronounce them so badly that they'll laugh their a*ses off....a total distraction from a class. Many of Chinese students do not take their English names seriously too. Then, giving them or looking for their English names is at times so troublesome. Thinking of some celebrities/famous people might be helpful, although it can be so time consuming that you might spend one lesson on just assigning English names.

Yeah! I've tried that myslef....depends on a class you have "how much time you will spend......
Now, I don't really know whether we should learn how to pronounce their Chinese names or whether we should push the issue of getting their English names for English classes. In my opinion, having an English name is a part of the process of learning English.
By the way, there are English name dictionaries out there. It should be every school's management job prior to our classes to consult and assign English names for all our students. Well, unless you freelance around on your own. Then, it's up to ya and ur students.
Cheers and beers |
