For the last year I have been wondering why I recieve so many "please come work on my school" emails. Well today, out of sheer boredom, I entered my full name into google. And guess what, 5 websites, completely unknown to me, are advertising me as a teacher. The worst part is, they are giving away very personal information (home address, phone numbers etc...).
Go ahead, give it a try. I wonder how many of us are unknowingly being used like this? And how should we put a stop to it? |

i tried it and my name only comes up where i would expect it. you must have posted your resume on some shady sites i think, or done something similar, otherwise t would seem difficult for any schools in china to get personal information, beyond your name. did you contact these places and tell them what you thought? |

Thats the thing, I have never posted my resume on any website, never. I always contact employers directly and never wait for them to contact me. |

Turns out I have some interesting namesakes - a country singer, a glamour model, an athlete and the author of 'First Aid for Dogs'. But no resumes or contact details where they shouldn't be. Voldermort, have you used recruiters in China, and could they have passed your resume around a bit? |

Meanwhile, poor Voldermort still has a problem:

My guess is that something like this has happened:
FAO X is feeling bored and underpaid one day and decides to branch out into the exciting world of teacher recruitment. He sets up a website. 'Teachers Available!' it says. 'Database of guaranteed blonde, blue-eyed foreigners with direct contact details!' Trouble is, it looks a bit bare right now because, for some reason, foreign teachers aren't scrambling to add their CVs. If there were plenty of CVs, if it looked legit, that would start the ball rolling and then FAO X would be on his way to the big time.
So, FAO X adds the CVs of all the current and former teachers from the dusty files in his office. 'Who's to know, right? They're not going to find out. It's just until things pick up a bit. Besides, some of them might even be looking for jobs, so I'm really helping them out. For free! They should be grateful!'
A couple of weeks go by. Then Recruiter Y, who has a website, is online checking out the competition. She comes across FAO X's website, thinks for a moment, then copies and pastes all the teachers' details onto hers. Now hers is bigger and better and will move higher up the search rankings.
Along comes Recruiter Z, who does the same thing... and so on.
Voldermort, if you're sure you've never sent your details directly to any of these websites, then they can't claim to be acting in good faith. They have stolen your personal information and they are using it, fraudulently, to pull in more teachers and more schools.
How to stop them:
1 Email the websites, politely asking them to remove your details.
2 Have a lawyer friend email/phone the websites, not so politely this time.
3 Write a 'Letter to Schools' as a Word document explaining that your details have been used without your consent and that the recruitment sites where your details are posted are acting fraudulently. Have it translated into Chinese. Email a bilingual version of this letter to each website, saying you will send it to every school that contacts you after a certain date if your personal information is not removed from their site.
4 And then, every time a school emails you offering a teaching position, send back the bilingual version of this letter. The schools, after all, are victims in this too. They might even have paid money for access to your information.
Good luck, and let us know what happens. It sounds like we're all vulnerable to this kind of thing. |
