Just a quick question. Any chance of getting a job with a visa without a university degree? I am celta certified, canadian native with experience and certified cambridge examiner. But i keep on seeing the qualifications and its always a uni degree. Thanks for any help. Take care. |

You can work here if you have a valid visa that allows you to work in Japan. Only instructor visa requires a degree. A working holiday visa, spouse dependent visas do not require degrees but you can work here on them. A Specialist in Humanities visa you can work in Japan with no degree but you must have three years related job experience in that field.
If you do not qualify for a visa you can NOT work. Simple as that.
Employers require a university degree to sponsor a work visa from immigration, or require you have a current valid work visa. Most employers now demand the latter i.e. you have a visa but no job or want to change. they dont want to sponsor your visa or they want you only part time.
A degree is needed to get sponsorship and often satisfies job requirements e.g. even on a legal spouse visa an employer will ask for a degree as they tell students that teachers all have degrees. |

He faked his degree, so his visa is fraudulently obtained, punishable by deportation. |

If you don't qualify for a visa, actually the correct term is status of residence, you can still can work in Japan, just not legally. There are tens of thousands of foreigners working in Japan without correct status of residence, and most of them are exploited by their employers.
I wouldn't recommend it. If you're looking for work in Japan without the correct "visa", I'd recommend Gaba. You're going to get screwed though. |

Its just like millions of illegal Mexican workers in the US . None of them have a green card but the California economy would grind to a halt without the 'guest workers' from the South.
Not much chance of that happening here but illegal immigration happens in every country, not just japan. I meant legal work visas. |

Supertraveller, what visa do you qualify for? The first thing 90% employers here ask for is a degree and if you dont have one you dont even get to the interview stage. Immigration requires a degree for your visa. Employers do not issue work visas. read this
Forget buying fake degrees in Thailand. Immigration is onto that scam and the penalties are severe.
Not all schools try and scam you over, some do, but they are profit making businesses, not schools, and if you dont have the qualifciations they ask for you dont have much to bargain with. They dont care about your CELTA and experience if you cant get a work visa. Teachers get screwed over here because they let the schools do that because of ignorance and naievete.
Working holiday is your only option and thats for people under 30. How old are you?

Yes, Most schools are screwing teachers over. Most teachers here don't even know that they're being screwed over. If you come over here without a degree, you're setting up yourself to be screwed over.
It's a lot easier to screw over an employee when their employer knows that they won't go to the law if they don't get paid on time or have their arm mangled in a factory accident.
If you really want to work in Japan, get a degree first. |

You're very right about this. White English teachers share a lot of the same problems that Mexican farm workers have, just that they either don't know about the problems or choose to ignore them. No proper health insurance, no workmans compensation, no job security, etc. |

I have been posting on these forums for the last six or seven years and you will always get someone posting who has been taken to the cleaners by their employer becuase they dont know what their legal rights are. All they care about is getting a job and getting a paycheck and 'be' in Japan. Sh-it hits the fan and they wonder what hit them and then the union or whoever has to clean up the mess.
Japan's labor laws are in English, you can find some on http://www.generalunion.org but I can guarantee, without fail you will get another person sign onto these dispatch companies, eikaiwas and they have a huge target painted on their back - "Kick Me".
Forewarned is forearmed but people don't listen as they know better or they are too lazy to do their homework, see? |

FYI, while on a spouse visa (Japanese husband), I was never asked to provide my degree to get a job. I just told them I had one, and it seemed to be good enough. |

A degree is not needed if you have a spouse visa, as you can work legally here. You need it for a sponsored work visa though.
If they ask for a degree it pays to have one though. |

So from what i gather, i will not be sponsered in japan without a university degree despite my teaching experience and CELTA degree. Is this correct? And if so, i guess that s it for going to japan. Thanks. |
