Hi All,
I'm about to interview for a position with ILA in Saigon and am interested in the attitudes of local people towards tattoos. I have pretty extensive work on both of my arms and shoulders, and while I obviously understand the need to cover them during my lessons as I do now with my students here in Moscow, I doubt I'm going to feel like wearing a long-sleeved shirt during the summers everywhere I go. I know that in the past tattoos were associated with criminals and prisoners, but have heard that attitudes have changed somewhat recently.
Basically, I just want to know if I'm going to frighten people and totally alienate the local population. I'm a quite normal looking person aside from the ink, no piercings or anything like that. Has anyone had any experience with this type of thing? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Matt |

I'd wear a long-sleeve shirt to cover the tattoos. Its not really professional and ILA is considered to be professional. However, when you're not working you can do what you want |

As I said, I understand the need to cover my tattoos during lessons. My concern isn't with how ILA will perceive them, because they never need know I have them, but rather how the locals will perceive them. Will it completely prohibit me from making conversation with people? Will taxi drivers not pick me up? If I'm traveling to smaller areas will people be put off? |

Sorry for the misconception - no I don't think you'll have any issues catching a taxi or doing any essential daily things.
No, conversation will be easy and I don't think that will be of issue to them. There are locals that have tattoos - it's not has prevalent as in Thailand but it does exist. |

Great,
thanks Cyan. Well, all I have to do now is get a job. Hopefully my interview today with ILA will go well and then I can put your advice to the test. Cheers.
On the other side though, has anyone ever seen someone or themselves been treated badly because of having tattoos in Vietnam? Any experiences? If not, I guess I'll just assume that everything is copacetic. Thanks. |
