I have a class of Year 5s, primary students. They are at that age where they are starting to get "cool". There are several that are hard to motivate to any degree. The Year 3s and 4s I have are not problem. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to deal with this challenging age?

Regards,
Fallon

Inside, they are still kids regardless of what they show on the exterior. Bribery still works wonders: candies, stickers, etc. Divide the class into teams and have them competing academically toward some goal/prize. See if your principal will recognize your top achievers in an assembly of some sort down the line. No matter what the age, games are always popular. Don't rely on them too much, but reward good grades or outgoing speaking personalities with a DVD once or twice a month - - if you can afford it, subsidize it with chips and soda (or allow the kids to bring treats on DVD day). Give free homework passes - - which means if they achieve a certain level, they get a free pass to NOT do a certain homework assignment, either their choice or yours.

Let them get creative, allowing them to do short plays, sing songs, or any other kind of "show-y" activity. Incorporate art projects with your English lessons if possible - - making posters and diagrams and such and then have the student(s) talk about them.

Act goofy with the kids (no, not like a dancing monkey!) - - the sillier some of your antics, the more the kids will lighten up and perhaps want to join in - - lip synching to music, miming, charades, etc.

Always have an academic goal in mind, but intersperse it with fun and off-the-wall activities to keep it interesting.
