Hey guys, i looked at some jobs in HK and was wondering, how do you guys live there????

Most jobs offer btwn HK$10000 and HK$14000 while a flat/studio will set u back HK$6000 to HK$7000 so that leaves about HK$4000 is that really enough to live on and save???

cheers

For a qualified person, those salaries are very low. With no qualifications and working at a tutorial centre, that may be accurate. But most qualified teachers here earn a lot more than that.

i have spoke with women who earn HK$4000 working at small restaurants. if they can get by with that, you can do it with HK$10,000.

Orgnx, you're talking about local people and they have absolutely no choice. They probably live in government housing and pay $1000 for rent (although I'm not too sure about the rent). For an expat, $10,000 is very tight unless you are prepared to have zero social life. I have many friends who are overseas born chinese TEFL teachers, they can speak the language and manage well in local places, even they would find $10,000 a strain to live on.

It sounds rather low, but it depends on your qualifications and experience. I get about 30 000 HK$ per month before tax. My apartment costs 6200 HK$ per month. I have a MA, CELTA and 9 years of experience.

vallillio, it seems you are telling guys on the Singapore forum about working in Tokyo, asking questions on the Thailand forum and other forums, too, about all sorts of locations from A-Z. It seems you have quite a broad spectrum of job locations. Perhaps you need to work out where you want to go first, before you consider salaries!

Settle with Shane, and see what it's worth!

i think $14K is more reasonable. but with the right qualifications, you ought to have something better... the starting salary for a secondary school teacher in HK is around $16K (local teachers). some private schools in hong kong offer pretty stingy salary... like around $10K.... it all depends on the type of school you are working for...

Dear BubbleBubble. I think you missed the point that the original poster may have been wasting everyone's time Wink

I only just caught up on this thread and find it so funny with all the threads that Miyazaki came up with. I also now wonder about the original poster's claim that he has a degree in ESL considering all the typos he made. Quite shocking.

Well, he'll never die wondering will he? He's trying everything and leaving hardly any stone unturned in his quest to find a job.

He deserves at least some points for persistence. ):
