Hi,
I am a British born Chinese, and considering a carreer change to teaching English in China, Korea, HK, taiwan. I have heard that it will be difficult for me to find jobs because I am Oriental. Does anyone have experiences or advice they can give me before I make the move.
Thanks in advance,
Ben |

Tricky question. I knew a Korean born American teaching in Korea but there weren't many. What qualifications can you offer them? A few Chinese people at my school were perfectly fluent in English and they got paid the local rate. If the school is just hiring a foreigner "for show", then they will likely discriminate. It really comes down to the specific jobs you're looking at. |

I would guess that the higher the level that you teach at, the better. IELTS vs university vs private language schools are very different environments.
Your location indicates that you are already in HK, so you should be able to answer that question easily enough by submitting a few applications. From what I heard about HK you pretty much need a Masters degree to find a decent job. The more developed the country the more likely you will be teaching kids and/or need advanced education... |
