I think this might be on Kent's cost of living sticky (as would your internet question).
It all depends where in Thailand. And do you mean a separate bedroom or a studio??? If the latter...then from 1-2K Baht a month upwards  The sky is the limit. |

Well, ideally, I'm looking for a place in Bangkok. If I were fortunate enough to land a job on a beach somewhere, so be it!!
I won't have a car, so access to good public transportation in imperative.
I'd like to find a decent area, especially in Bangkok. Preferably with easy access to hangouts and possible work areas.

Are there any specific areas in Bangkok that I should look into or avoid?
Also, what type of contracts do landlords require? Is there a possibility of month to month or are there one year contracts?

I got a super-ific - mega-manic-super-duper apt. for B8200 (I think). But it is a very nice one bedroom, nice view - A/C, basic simple cable TV, walk to work in two minutes type place.
But, from what I hear, you can pay half as much for a good studio (bedsit) type place. But - I am an older guy and like a nice apt. Don't care for a studio. |

As close to a BTS Skytrain or MRT Subway station as possible.
The traffic in Bangkok is usually bad or really bad.

What part of Bangkok would that be? Close to BTS or subway? |

I would avoid the touristy areas. Only comforts that could be lacking is a shop that sells either one of the two English daily newspapers, Brit-style pubs, and perhaps western-style food.
What sort of work are you thinking of doing? It you want to teach at a government school, put your name about and wait a bit. You should be able to find a school near to where you live.
The area I'm in right now is about 30 minutes walk from the the SkyTrain.
But that's OK. The bus service here is really frequent. I rarely have to wait more than five minutes for a bus.
Contracts? Most landlords will require a deposit of some sort. You get back the deposit if you stay a minimum period. When I moved in here the owner required a months rent plus a deposit of a month (total - 8400 B) If I move out within the minimum period of three months I lose the deposit. As for month to month, I haven't heard of that. But it would be the cheaper option to go into an apartment for a month and lose your deposit rather than stay the equivalent time in a reasonably decent hotel. |
