Eva, apart from a working holiday visa there are virtually NO options if you dont have a degree as immigration requires one for a work visa. A majority of teachers here have a degree and are at a conversation school or working at a dispatch company or on the JET program. None of these are what I consider a long-term career track teaching job, maybe OK for a year or two to fund your travels.
You will then be looking at a Masters degree if you really want to get into the betterand more secure jobs such as colleges and universities. Even having a CELTA doesnt help so much here. |
I am going there on a Working Holiday Visa. And if I feel like this is what I want to do, then when I return home to Australia I'll begin a degree and be able to pursue employment in Japan or other places, like Hong Kong or Singapore. I was thinking of doing a Business Degree when I came home, good or bad? |

Well that's good or bad depending on what you want to do with your life. Do you want to teach English a s acareer or go into business? A business degree wont be much use here teaching English or working for Japanese companies unless its coupled with work experience and Japanese ability. People wont bang down your door because you have an MBA but no experience and a little Japanese.
Do you plan to work overseas long term and live outside Australia? A business degree is a useful and marketable skill but you must have skills that are marketable to people.
I have no idea about Hong Kong but from what I read recently it is vastly overrated for English speaking expats and salaries for expats are not what they used to be. best check the Hong Kong forums for info. Dont forget it is part of China now so its not the same place it was under the British and the glory days are well past. Singapore is said to be extremely stuffy and conservative, Its a fine country, a FINE for this, a FINE for that.......
What often gets jobs for people is timing persistence, connections and quite a bit of LUCK. Same in Japan, too. |

I was thinking of the business degree simply for the fact that I've seen many many jobs that say you simply MUST have a degree in any field to be considered, mostly for visa requirements. Teaching experience is a bonus.
Hong Kong is just about my dream place to live, as long as I could live there alright I know I'd thrive.
And Singapore gets such a bad rap, but when I was there, I absolutely fell in love with the place. I never had a problem with any of the issues you get fined for, and I felt totally safe and relaxed. It's not exactly the stuffy and constricting place it's made out to be. |
