I'm new but dream to work in Italy. Would be great if you're currently in the country and could share how you got you last teaching position, it would be interesting to see the trend. Eg mostly 'just faxed my CV and had 5 offers' or thru a friend etc. Please share you success stories!

I've been working in Italy for almost 3 years now and I quite like it.
Which part of Italy would you like to go to? Which schools have you contacted? Before you leave try to check out what the school is really like, especially if you're heading for the South. It often happens that they promise you a lot but at the end it's a bit different.... Ask about the contract and what they're paying (also transfers etc..) If possibile try to get a written contract. All schools have them so if the say it's not possibile, nonsense! Then something's probably wrong. But I don't want to be too negative because if you're in the right place it's really nice teaching here! Nice schools are Wallstreet and British, they normally pay quite well. Good luck!

Dina, thanks so much for responding!
I'll try to look into those two schools you mentioned. I didn't apply anywhere yet - still in London, just starting my CELTA course.
I was hoping for a position in Trieste area. I have to follow my husband who got a job there (no connection to TEFL, he's a physicist), so I don't have much geographic flexibility. And I'm worried it might be very hard to find something in a relatively small city.

Hi Mari,

I know your posting is from a year ago, but I'm wondering if you had any luck with ESL jobs in Trieste. I have a Master's degree in TESOL and Trieste is one of the cities my husband (non-TESOL) are considering. Are there any/many jobs available for qualified teachers?

Mary

Depends on your qualifications, nationality and where you want to live.
Where I live Wallstreet is the lowest paying school and also the worst for both teachers and students. I won't go into detail.
