I personally think that Confucianism has had quite a big influence on the Japanese morally. In many ways I think it has been negative. So many people in Japan seem to be rather passive and uncomplaining about corrupt lawmakers and politicians when a far better response would be outrage. Somehow lawmakers such as Hisakazu Fukushima should be slung in jail where they belong, but a judge said during his rape trial that he taken "social responsibility" and the girl "only suffered light injuries".

The law only applies to you if you are lower on the Confucian scale, or perhaps if you are an upstart like Horie. It also explains why people in Japan accept having shit heaped on them at work by their bosses. Instead of complaining or striking they grovel and give up their legal entitlements to paid holidays. Women are far more accepting of being groped on the train in Japan because the men who grope them are considered superior to them because those men are older and therefore clearly wiser and have more right to life.
It's apparent in the language that there are certain forms of address to be used to your 'inferiors' which must never be used to people who are better than you.
As far as Buddhism is concerned I think that has had an influence on alot of Japanese metaphysically. Alot of people I have talked to believe they are coming back in another life, but I don't see how Buddhism has had much of an affect on the Japanese morally. |

I recommend The Chrysanthemum and the Sword. It's a bit dated, but it's a quick, easy read (I need such books). It was written at the end of WWII, but it's still relevant today. |

| generally I don't mind the "small c" Christians (did I just invent that term, I quite like it!) except those dorky long skirts and socks that the women wear, and when they ring my doorbell early on a weekend. |

Interestingly enough, the term "christian" was actually a derogatory term originally meaning "little christ". It became so widely used in the rise of the early christian church after Christ's resurrection that the term became one of common usage.
Now the question is could Japanese morality be better than it is? |

Ah yes, Karoshi. Well, the widows are getting their revenge on the companies for that by going to the courts. Wish them the best on that.
