I recently met a young Canadian teacher here with no degree who is teaching on a 3 year, multi-entry buisness visa he received at the Vancouver TECO.
This guy told me that he was able to have his lawyer pushed back his court dates to sometime in 2007 so that he could come to Taiwan and teach EFL - He was running a marijuana grow operation out in Surrey, British Columbia with a few other guys when the RCMP raided their house and arrested all of them.
This guy is up on so many criminal charges....Yet he still received a 3 year multi-entry visa and doesn't have a degree.
And the Taiwanese government has opened up the doors for him to come work with young children even!
No one knows for sure as there are no stats but I would just guess by the way things are run here that there are tons of criminals and peadophiles running around places like Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia ostensibly to teach EFL. |

Why did you post this opinion here if you cannot find any evidence to support it? |
Fine. It's your forum now. |

Hey Einstien, school owners read this forum. Do you think you could give some thought to the impression of Canadians you are giving them? We don't need things to be any worse than they are. |

Hey Goofball:
Too late - Canadians already have a bad rep as pot heads and drug smugglers and also for using fake degrees in Taiwan.
Canadians also have a bad rep for the doing the same schit in Korea. |

You don't need a degree to obtain a visitor visa. This guy you mention sounds like someone with problems. He's continuing that trend here in Taiwan because he is breaking the rules here, too. You can't teach English legally on a sixty day visa. Taiwan hasn't opened the doors for him to teach children at all. He's teaching illegally . The point of this thread was to discuss whether or not it was possible to teach legally in Taiwan without either at least a BA degree or AA diploma with a tesl cert. This example does nothing to disprove what has been shown to be the case earlier. That this guy in the example you give is obtaining, through fraudulent means, visas intended for legitimate business people says eveything about the kind of individual he is and does not spoil the image of Taiwan at all. Incidentally, I know a legit foreign businessman who is finding it increasingly difficult to obtain this class of visa precisely because of the abuses of the system people like the one you mention have been carrying out for so long.

Well, this is a pretty obvious troll, but I'll respond for the benefit of other readers. The international community in Taiwan-- be it Canadians, brits, Aussies, Kiwis, Saffies, Americans and so on-- enjoys a fairly good reputation in Taiwan. I think the average person in Taiwan will give you a chance as an individual. However, all people in the world can tend to make judgements about groups of people based on their personal experiences with them, however limited these experiences may be. Expats behaving badly can to some degree negatively impact peoples' percption of westerners. How to prevent this? Well, a good place to start would be not to come and work in Taiwan under fraudulent pretences. Obtain the necessary visas and permits required to be a legit teacher in Taiwan. Don't abuse the system or advocate doing so. Stay away from drugs, illegal activity and those who carry out such activities. In short, don't be a jerk and you won't be treated as such. BTW, Canadians do not have a reputation any worse than any other expat nationality. |

Canadians have a bad rep on the EFL scene for being pot heads, coke dealers and using fake degrees and other documents both here in Taiwan and in Korea.
Here's a quote on the Taiwan forum here from the
follwing thread:
| Quote: |
| ...regarding pot and canadians. weird.. couple years ago there was a drug bust in a popular pusan (korea) bar.. mostly canadians were smoking pot in the bar assuming all koreans thought it would be assumed it was cigarettes.. undercover guys went in and a big drug bust connected with quite a few people being busted and whatever else went down. |

Do you live in Taiwan? If so, for how long? Do you speak Chinese? Do you really know what locals think? I do. 1) Locals have a difficult time distinguishing between natonalities of English speaking white folks, usually mistakingly assuming most to be Americans. 2) The supposed reputation Canadians have is one expressed by some people from other expatriate nationalities and not Taiwanese. Your quote is most likely from an expat. 3) With a few exceptions, the general populace is mostly tolerant of western expats of any nationality. 4) Canadians do not generally enjoy a reputation any better or any worse than expats from other countries in Taiwan. |
