| Definately so Kent - Margate has that kind of accent, and so does most of the North coast leading into the Estuary. You go drinking in Rochester or Maidstone and count how many chavettes you hear screeching "Darrren! you come back 'ere, ya littul bleedah! |

You forget 75% of the county? You should get off that little railway that goes round and round your end of the marsh and go and talk to some real people once in a while
For those wondering what I'm on about, stick ROMNEY HYTHE DYMCHURCH in your search engine

| I have been on it with hordes of teenagers...far too many times. Give me a swim in Ramsgate harbour any day. |

| *laughs* I went to school in Ramsgate. Oh, such happy memories, skipping classes to paddle in Ramsgate beach, letting the sewage foam slap at your ankles and the broken glass gently nibble at your soles... |

The Guardian Holiday section just did a 20 best holiday destinations in the UK and can you believe it Folkestone was one of them.
Tracey Emin said about Margate
''you don't lose your virginity there-you have it broken into.'' |

| It's very difficult to justify, but Im going to try. Ive been here for 18 months now, and my Polish is pretty poor. I do try, and when I have the energy I do pick up my books and read a few pages, but at the moment I do a 45 hour teaching week PLUS the travelling (so there's lesson planning on top of that too), Im trying to rebuild my car and redecorate my flat, and as soon as I go out for a drink the locals switch to English for the "free lesson" and after a few beers, it's all to easy to let them get away with it. (Theyre not really scamming a lesson, theyre just happy to try out their English.) Add into that the relative scarcity of DECENT learning material, unhelpful bosses ("we'll only charge you 1400zl for a half-semester course") and a girlfriend who speaks perfect English too, and it's understandable. It's not excusable, of course, but it IS explainable, and I don't really feel it fair to call it arrogance (unless this guy has been in Poland for over 5 years...) |

It's not funny at all, it's quite tragic that the person who had the decency to can this guy after the way he mistreated students, now has to work for such a d*ck h*ad. Why are there so many bad Anglo-speakers coming here, they give the rest of us decent ones, a bad name... *mopes* |

That's a good point. The reality is due to the large number of people who can speak English in Poland it is getting harder and harder to be able to practice basic Polish in the major cities.
Like most people I studied Polish on and off when I wasn't so busy teaching yet I never had to use anything past, "Prosze mleko."
I'd have liked to learn Polish so I can speak to my fiance's family but I don't think it's ever going to happen while I'm outside of Poland.
In fact that's why I like living in China. Because here I am able to use the Chinese I learn as soon as I learn it. I've been here a year now and I can see that after 2 more years I will actually be fluent in Mandarin, because as it is I can usually express myself whenever I need to. |

The most blatant example of this is a British guy. I will just call him Warren Whitless (Any association with any real person by this name is completely unintended.)
Warren came here in 1993, but he didnt finish his contract because he got canned for talking down to his students. Shortly thereafter, he started his own school. He is now married to a Polish woman with a young daughter, AND HE STILL CANT SPEAK THE LANGUAGE! (This is probably a good thing for him, because if he could speak the language in public, his social skills are such that some Pole might be inclined to enlighten him regarding proper manners)
The funny thing is that the Polish school owner, who canned his dupa years ago, now translates for him.

Please edit that name out. Personal insults like that are not called for here. No matter who they are aimed at. |
