Hey guys, I've been looking through the posts on this site and I noticed a few people say that they're earning like 400,000YEN a month! Most jobs advertised I've seen are for like 250,000 to 260,000 how on earth do you manage to earn more than 260k a month and especially 400k??

Cheers

Get a better paying job than the bottom feeder eikaiwa jobs.
teach privates in your free time.
have a second job and work on your days off e.g. teach at companies.

Getting better jobs depends on your qualifications and experience. University salaries start at 400,000 yen a month.

This may entail working here a bit. Most entry level jobs don't pay more than 250,000. Experience helps.

I assume you are also talking about English teaching jobs which max out at 250K a month or less.

Non-English teaching jobs such as IT and translation can net more, but these depend on your skills, experience and and what you can offer employers. A majority of English teaching jobs are considered low skilled and easy level of entry, hence the low and falling salaries for teaching neophytes.

What happened to Naples, Spain, Lebanon, Brighton, Montreal and all the rest?

And what ever happened to the boyfriend in Shinjuku?

I think 400,000 a month would be pretty difficult to do at a conversation school. Generally, these max out at about 250,000 and don't leave much time for private classes because you'd be working on evenings and weekends (when most people are available for privates).

As Paul said, starting salary for universities is usually around 400,000 but I've seen a distressing trend with some university salaries falling to 300,000 or less.

I had a buddy that made 400,000 by teaching full-time at a junior high school in Kyoto, and then doing part-time work at a conversation school one day a week in Osaka. Usually a junior high school or senior high school will pay about 300,000 (although not if it is through a dispatch company like W5 or Interac). Some good privates might be able to bump this up to 400,000 a month (but I doubt it).
