Why would I want to use that in a lesson?

My students write like that anyway!

Is "y'all" a word? If so, is that one word or two?

Texas grammar:

"Y'all" is singular -- one word

"All y'all" is the plural -- two words

I have, but its still interesting. I'm going to try it out on the native speaker 15 year olds I teach, as well as the 16-18 year old ESLers. I'm guessing the Germans will get it and the East Asians will have no idea. The Middle Easterners? Let's find out.

I have to disagree snorkelqueen. I think 'y'all' , just the one word without 'all' in front of it, is plural as well. If I'm talking to just one person, I say "you"; if it's two or more I use y'all. Maybe we do it differently in Georgia.

I probably only say "all y'all" when there's 3 or more people.

"All y'all need to quit spelling 'y'all' wrong"

(a big pet peeve of mine is when people spell it ya'll) So irritating!

A pet peeve of mine is when "y'all" is even mentioned. Do people in the south even realize that the rest of the world finds that word/words absolutely ridiculous and thinks it is a reflection of the intelligence of the people who use it? Or maybe you know that and is why y'all say it. Laughing

The term y'all can most definitely be singular.

And y'alls is the possessive form in the lexicons of many American southerners. Smile

A bit like the Australian "youse" [plural, you] only used by the ill-educated, and even then, only in speech.

actually i grew up in California and have a law degree; so much for the theories (a) that people who say "y'all" are not intelligent, and (b) that only Southerners say it Smile

i say it as a courtesy to the people in Texas, where i live; i see it as sweet and soft, as long as it isn't dragged out for 3 or 4 minutes [being dramatic about the time] and isn't said in a nasally C&W song manner

other than that, i don't use verbal local color much and do not have a Southern accent

i've heard some local people say "pick-me-up truck" instead of "pick-up truck" and "fixin' to [____________]" [do something] whereas many of us would say "about to [____________]" [do something]; i don't go there

in Houston people generally use "y'all" to refer to one person or to refer to a group of any number of people; the plural being "all y'all" was actually from a joke i heard here in Houston a year or two ago

"ya'll" is like someone scraping their fingernails on the chalkboard 2 me, 2

c ya' in language heaven, if not before,

Queenie

Youse is used in england also..'what are youse doing tonight!' and i disagree, i dont think it's only for the ill-educated. It makes perfect sense. We dont have the luxury of the french 'vous' or italian 'voi' so when addressing more than one person it can identify a group as opposed to an individual.

I don't doubt your intelligence, but possession of a law degree is not proof of its existence. Wink

And for those of you who are non-Americans: Even though California is in the southern half of the US, its residents are not usually referred to as Southerners. Southerners are from the southeastern states as well as Texas. Rolling Eyes
