Both are the same. You wouldnt be able to tell the difference if you worked at both anyway.
Go on, live dangerously. why are you so afraid of risk? |

They are both big companies with lots of locations. You could end up somewhere good or somewhere crap. It's a gamble. |

Neither pay for your flight over here, or back home again. Nor do they give you much of anything for a bonus at the end of a year. So, they are both crap. |

I understand that you want to make posts. But, please, enough of this kind of crap. I'm usually not negative, but really! Ask a real question or please refrain from posting here. |

At the very least get the name of the school right in your heading. |

I worked for Shane for 2 years. Salary was always on time, we got more holidays than most other eikaiwas, students were mostly good and fun to teach, we knew which school we would be teaching at each week (with exceptions of course), we could use extra materials in the lessons. Most complaints about working at Shane were about the managers (DOS). Downside? It's an business like any other big chain in Japan. So money comes first for them.
Over the years I've discovered that the people who complain the most about working at conversation schools are the ones who are fresh out of university and never had a real job before. Sure there are exceptions, but that has been my observation.
Would I do it again? Probably not. Do I regret it? Not at all. |

Unless times have changed in the nearly five years since I worked for them, Shane do pay for your flight.
They are not quite the same - Shane holidays are much longer than Nova's. However, you cannot take ANY of them on days of your choosing. |

According to some Shane teachers that I talked to on the weekend, the salaries, bonuses and vacations are all better than at NOVA. NOVA seems to be at the very bottom of the ESL barrel in Japan. If it gets you here, then that's fine. If anyone is planning on hanging around for more than a year though, I would think anyone who stays at NOVA to be insane.
Shane seems to reimburse their teachers for part of their flight. Plus, they promote 'real' English, not that American gibberish. |

If you're going into something asking 'which is worse, this or that?' then it suggests that you must only have a purely negative mindset.
I thought vallillio had settled on Shane for the fall - have you changed your mind already? Shane must be getting nervous at your arrival
As you have no experience of either, just settle for one, stick it out for a year, then form your judgements.
Personally, I'd opt for Shane over Nova purely owing to longer vacation and more predictable schedule. Otherwise, your students are pretty much of the same type in both of these places. For a first year, a large chain school is okay. |

vallillo1983 is going to have a busy year! ha ha. Did I count 10 different countries? That's just over a month in each. It is important to do your research, but I found that searching usually answers all of these types of questions.
About the big franchse schools, my experience with them is in China, but in my opinion they are an O.K. start if you're just qualified, they take a lot of the stress out of relocation and tend to hold your hand through the whole process. You might need that if it's your first time abroad.
I kind of wish I had the time and enthusiasm to post so many messages
Back to marking exams. |
