What's wrong with the sticky about your rights in Taiwan? Specifically? |

Here are some places for you to begin your research. I hope others will add good ones that they find, as well. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list, but these are the ones I have saved in my computer that have been helpful to me.
http://taiwanease.com lots of very specific forums about Taiwan, jobs, teaching, money, family, visa, legal issues, etc.
That should keep you busy for a few weeks, after you've exhausted the search feature on this forum.
Be sure to add anything else interesting that you find, and happy researching![/i] |
Thanks for the plug! In addition to our community forums, we've also got a great directory. Come by and take a look - we're a friendly bunch!

| The most important thing to know, I guess, is that you are not in the USA, and that it will be most frustrating and possibly fruitless to pursue your "rights". So, as the only newbie focused info-packed sticky up there, it isn't very helpful. |

Lumber Jack,
Now that I know more about what your looking for, maybe forums rather than blogs are your best avenue. I had mentioned the parenting forum on forumosa for you - did you check there? They have a visa forum also, as well as a marriage forum.
Yes I am sure of my blog story. It's my own personal experience. I know people get ranty on the internet and blow off steam about their schools, but when you read a preson's blog, you can get a feel for what kind of person they are and whether or not the problems they're having are because of themselves or because of ther situation. Please don't waste time on this thread trying to stee people away from it. Sometimes blogs can be invaluable, sometimes forums are the best way to go. I don't care to argue about this any further.
Oh, and I don't work for Dave's and I'm not in charge of making threads stickies. I'm just trying to be helpful, and I don't think that's something that should be discouraged.
Moaman, thanks for adding a link to this thread. I wish more people would do this. If we kill the arguing and people add the good sources of info that they find here, maybe it will get stickied sooner or later or at least stay on the first page where people are likely to find it.
Cheers all, and good luck in your quest to make your time in Taiwan as suitable for your needs as it can be. |

Yeah - put a sticky on this thread Mr.Kal-guk-su or whatever yer name is!
If you do, I'll go back and edit all my outrageous "blogs are not heaven sent" comments out, and replace them with very short and positive poems about "the isla formosa". |

I think most of us have pretty much worked this one out, but thanks for the tip anyway.
I assume that those among us who are from the USA would still be there if they wanted everything to be like the good ol' US of A. And for those among us who are not from the US and have never been to the US I guess that we will fail to see the relevance of your comment.

Which is the whole point of the sticky in the first place!
We do have rights here. These are clearly stated, and more and more foreigners are choosing to exercise our rights. The point of the sticky is to point out what these rights are so that everyone has a basis to work off. It remains however up to the individual to choose to pursue those rights.
This leads me to what I think is a pretty obvious question for lumber jack. What personal experience do you have with pursuing your rights here in Taiwan?
Sorry for hijacking this thread!@!@ |

I've heard so many ESL teachers burble on about their "rights" - it doesn't stop people on this forum from making comments like "Taiwan is a country with third world standards of socio-economic development", which means that there will hardly be any. I've never known anyone pursue a successful legal case in the countries I've been in.
"Rights" are a very abstract thing. If the authorities don't always believe in them, then you shouldn't rely on them too much yourself. As a foreigner in Asia you get things done through relationships with people, usually, not through the courts.
I don't mean it is never done, and the longer you stay in a country, the more of a platform you have to do it. But newcomers are highly unlikely to benefit from that kind of advice. It sends the wrong mesage about the TEFL life. Well, its probably true that if Clark will put you up for a while and pay your fees you'll be OK. That's the point, really.
Yeah, Yeah, I don't know Taiwan so well. I suppose it is a legal paradise compared to Korea, with rich and confident newbie teachers eh? Anyways, this argument is all on the other thread anyway. Since no-one is chummy enough with the co-ordinators to make a new sticky, how about clearing that spat off and putting some useful links up? |
