Hey all in Vietnam,
I too am an English teacher but I am in Taiwan instead of Vietnam. A friend of mine went to Vietnam recently and she visited a city called Hoi An. She claims that this is an excellent place for tailored clothing, and very cheap also. After she told me of this I was immediateloy shocked that you could get clothes custom tailored at such cheap prices. Made to measure clothes at extremely cheap prices. Sounds good to me.
I would like to know if this is really the case? Is Hoi An the place to go? I have always wanted to visit Vietnam, and now that I have learned about the clothes I am even more intrigued.
I know you probably think I am a brand *beep* and all I want to do is go there for the clothes. But I also want to visit a place that will be nice in the winter. I will probably be visiting next Chinese New Year and I want to get as much info before then.
I would ideally like something nice where I can lie around in the sun and do sweet f$%# all for about two weeks and have some clotes made while I am at it.
Thanks for any help, tips and suggestions

Hoi An is a great place to get clothes made, but not really a place to lie around in the sun, a pool perhaps. They have a beach, but it's not like some of the other places, like Mui Ne or Nha Trang.
I could recommend a tailor shop if you want to go. We got a lot of things made a couple of months ago and now i wish we had gotten more. There are about 400 shops in Hoi An so it can be difficult to choose. |

It's not just Hoi An either There are plenty of good tailors...at a such a bargain! Not only was I tourist once but I'm also Vietnamese I'd recommend the city as in HCM..the fashion is more modern and the tailors are more skilled in my humble opinion. I had 1000000000000 PJ's made last time I was there (4 years ago) and they still last today...so the quality isn't bad either |

If I go to HCM are there any nice beaches down there. I would also like to spend some of my time sittin' in the sun. Where could I go from there that would tickle my fancy?

o.O HCM is not known for beaches...If you want to do that then I suggest Nha Trang (I think it's about 2-3 hours away). |

If u want a beach - yes, Nha Trang is quite cool.
It's 7 1/2 hours on a train from HCMC (or about 50mins on a plane.)
There's also Phu Quoc island whch is awesome if you want some peace and quiet.
HCMC isn't exactly picturesque so if you're only here for a short time its best to stay in Hoi An. |

Nha Trang's beach is something to behold, it goes on for miles and miles. The city itself is not much to look at mind you. |

We loved the beach at Hoi An - if we go back we will probably stay there rather than in town. Hoi An is a lovely place. The tailoring is very cheap. I had heaps made but have lost so much weight since then I never got a chance to wear them. Make sure you know what you want, have a picture or something to copy. |

Sorry just to clear up a little confusion on my part. Is HCM the place as HCMC? I'm guessing it is, but I don't want to make any big blunders.
Could you let me know a little more about Nha Trang. What's the tailoring like out there? Sounds like the beaches are good, but will I be able to find any good tailors.
Ideally I would like to just stay in one place where there's a nice beach and some good tailors.
Thanks for everyone's help on the one

I bought two suits in Hoi An, and seeing as I had/have little experience in knowing the various materials(they'll ask you in English which material you want, as well as showing you various pictures of the different styles), but when I came back to China, my wife said that one was synthetic fiber, and the other low quality, but natural. for what I thought was a real bargain, was about 20% more expensive than China. |
It is buyer beware there for sure. Luckily, my wife knows her fabrics so we got some good quality material. Many do get ripped off though. |

yes it is buyer beware and even if the tailor has a good reputation they may not provide you with the fair deal or the best quality fabric.
they don't appreciate returning customers in many cases either. |
