While sitting in on a Chinese English teacher's class this past week, the students were given a pamphlet on what to memorize and say when "Leaders" visited during the university's Official Evaluation Period (i.e. the-time-the-school-must-bribe-to-get-more-funding-period). To quote the teacher,

"Okay, yeah, so this is what you need to memorize and say when, ah, they, the Leaders, okay, THE LEADERS come and ask you some questions. They will be, ah, testing you, okay? So memorize this tonight, or tomorrow, or next week or later. It's okay. Just memorize it."

I would like to share some of the "official" answers to the yet to be asked questions that will be presented to the students at a yet to be determined time:

(三)...关手机。。。坚决杜绝迟到,早退,旷课,睡觉,玩手机,聊天,吃东西,看报纸等不良现象。

3. Turn off your phones...be firm in putting an end to being late, leaving class early, skipping class, sleeping, playing with your cell phones, conversing in class, eating in class, reading newspapers in class and other unhealthy tendencies/acts

(四)...自觉佩戴校徽

4. Remember/Be aware to wear your school pin...

(十)不做有损学校声誉的事

10. Do not do anything to harm the reputation of the school

As things stand now, I've yet to see this "school pin" on anyone's chest or lapel (though I do see the odd Mao Ze Dong glittering in all its gold on a few student's sweaters). But more difficult to enforce will be point three: I fear that my students, at least, may be tought to pursuade to put an end to the cell phone abuses. Only a few eat in class, less leave early; and given the size of my classes, I'm never really sure who should be present and who should not be absent.

Given that students do very little aside from sitting in study halls, smoking and going to the long streets in the city that sell cheap clothes (something that contradicts the intellectual environment notion), the school's reputation seems rather safe from harm. I only know of one instance where the reputation received a blow: it was when my friend caught a student from the university shoplifting a wallet from her store. It was after confiscating the would-be student/thief's I.D. card that her background began to unravel, and the hurt to my university done!

Myself, I'm considering perhaps carrying the pamphlet around with me at all times, and quote from it when appropriate (in the tradition of quoting from texts during the 60s/70s by people in assumed positions of authority) just to get some laughs out of the students.

T: "Don't you know that your eating in class directly contravenes Article 3 of The Leaders Hopes and Dreams for the University?"

S: 操你妈

  and so the charade continues...
