This semester, I'm taking the big plunge and going to attempt to put together a student literary journal for "publication" from my two writing classes. Both classes are a great bunch of "kids" (if you can 19-20 year olds "kids"). I teach at a teacher's college. I made the announcement today in class about this, and no one knew what the hell I was talking about. It then occurred to me...oh yeah...I guess self-publishing isn't exactly encouraged in the People's Republic! (slaps forehead).
Anyway, with the assistance of my fellow foreigners, we're going to try to put together at least a ten page magazine of short stories, essays, and poems from these two classes.
I was wondering...have any of you guys had any experience doing this here, or in another country? This is my first time advising this sort of project, and I would like to be aware of any pitfalls. I haven't gone to the administration yet, but I plan to pitch this project as an innocuous and possibly prestige-building deal. (no politics here, no sir!)
Any advice is GREATLY appreciated,
Roberto
The Chairman of this Journal, at least. |

Put up some reward! I can't believe there is going to be enthusiastic contributing competition unless you offer up some goodie (preferably cash). I know it sounds like corrupting young unspoilt minds - but they have already grown used to pecuniary rewards for being around with their family each spring festival, so no worry on this account!
And then, you need to instill in them some respect for correct and accurate language - proofreading! |
