ESL Summer Camp in Shenzhen, China looking for foreign teachers!
Quote: |
The qualifications are as follows:
#Must be a native English speaker
#TESOL or Bachelors degree or higher
#Prior Experience in Teaching Middle school, primary or adult students.
#Good personality and charisma
The job description is as follows:
# The teacher will be responsible for teaching two hours a day
# The class for adults will be 7:oopm-9:00pm with weekends off.
# The middle school and primary students classes will begin at 9:30am and end at 10:30am and from 11:00am-12:00noon.
# All classes will begin on July 17th and end on Aug18th.
# The summer camp will take place in the city center of Shenzhen near litchi park.
ps: Living accomodations will not be included in this year's event. |
Notice the lack of information on trivial things such as pay, meals, transportation, extra activities . . . and I guess if you actually live in Shenzhen and already have your own place, then no problem. Otherwise you "get" to pay for your own hotel for a month for the opportunity to work here! Wheeee! |

And what does the teacher do with the second two hours? Could he/she leave a recording of him/herself reading "McDonalds coupons", or perhaps just stick a photo on the whiteboard for the adults to practice their inane questions at during those irresponsible/ unresponsible other two hours!
Or is "a day" in Shenzhen really just 12 hours? |

If you search the recruiter's name and email addy you will find his reputation has been questioned by some FTs who have dealt with him. Perhaps that is why the ad is so vague?

What are they going to give applicants, then? Dead ones?
Sounds like a dead-end job to me, even if it is for the summer. One to avoid, I think, especially because, just as kev7161 has pointed out, not even the salary is mentioned.
I am also, like him, highly suspicious at the lack of teaching hours: for all we know, what happens in between to fill in the "hole" may be like the Black Hole of Calcutta. After all, the whole point of a summer job is that foreign teachers are worked almost to death! They are not there for a holiday!
FTs are basically going to be like child-minders and entertainers for this company, which, inevitably, is going to rake in the money from parents only too happy to part with their cash in order to get their already spoiled little brats completely away from them for a month.
FTs are the key to such companies' coffers: a foreign face sells and all the company wants is for the FT to keep the brats happy and give neither them nor their parents any cause for complaint. In return, the company will give the FT a paltry wage (the younger and more inexperienced the FT is, the paltrier the wage) and a feeling of "never again" at the end of a month of sheer and utter exhaustion - and not just because of the kids, either. The admin will undoubtedly cause the FT a lot of grief and frustration, too.
One does not need to be a psychology major to see what it is that these people want; you can see right through them straight away! You might as well spend your summer touring - that will be more rewarding than working for one of these cowboy outfits. |
