I've been scanning all my important doc and they are huge! Think about 900KB. They are jpg and the Internet part comes up on the top.

I'm trying to shrink things so that I can email them, everything is in CHinese, so I don't know what I'm doing.

How can I shrink these documents?

I found that if I put them into Word and Save them As web files, they go down to 10 or so KB. BUt can I sent these to employers? There is a whole file folder that goes along with them!

Hi Naturegirl

Seek out a program called winzip...it's a widely used compression utility that should make your files significantly smaller.

If you save as web page, the 10Kb is not the saving, it is simply extra wasted space. The folder you have with it contains the file, which will be exactly the same size as it was before.

You will have to get a graphics program that has its inteface in English. You then look for Export, choose .jpg as the file format since it appears all your files have already been saved as .jpg's anyway, and then choose a level of compression, look at the file size, look at the preview, and then choose the best compromise between file size and clarity.

Don't use winzip for compressed graphics files. They are already compressed and winzip will increase the size because it can't compress them any further but adds its own overhead to the file size. The only time it is useful is when you want to send a folder of files as one file. It won't save any space, but it will wrap them together as one file.

Incidentally, how many documents do you have that make up that 900KB? In my experience, and I receive thousands of documents for job applications every year, the optimum size for most documents is between 60-100KB, so if you have a load of documents, you may find that you don't really want or need to make the file sizes any smaller.

Incidentally there are still companies that use Hotmail accounts for job applications. Presuming you can't be too choosy about who you apply to and have to try them anyway, just send your plain vanilla CV, and tell then you'll semd the rest later if they are interested. Hotmail has a pathetic limit of 2MB and you don't want your application to be bounced because you are over quota.

Are you scanning in Colour or Black & White?

Black & White for text docs shouldn't be huge at all even at A4 size. Colour on the other hand would be depending on your resolution.

What are you going to do with these docs? If you are displaying them on a webpage, 120dpi, I've heard, is the max a computer screen can display (someone correct me here if I'm wrong) so above that is wasted.

However, if you intend to print them out then you need the quality.
